BBIS is brewed using the same oat-forward and British specialty malt recipe that we followed with the original release in 2013. Over the years we have adjusted and enhanced it, introducing new techniques to produce a bigger, richer, and silkier beer. Most of the barrels in this year’s blend have spent about 18 months aging in 8- to 12-year-old bourbon barrels, with the addition of some younger BBIS to contribute to the complexity of this bold imperial stout.

Tasting notes: Warming aromas of cocoa, milk chocolate and bourbon. The sip offers a silky mouthfeel, with vanilla and rich milk chocolate mid palate. Background notes of smoke, licorice and coffee are wrapped up with some cherry liquor at the finish.

The pour has basically no head and an almost black color. The aroma is mostly alcohol with notes of coffee and chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium considering how strong this Stout is. It has a nice sweetness to it which makes it a nice winter warmer. Earlier Rating: 11/10/2021 Total Score: 4.2 Pours a dark brown with almost no head, this 2021 version said 14% ABV. Nice bourbon aroma with notes of chocolate, vanilla, oak and cherries. Nice medium bodied stout, not overly heavy. Sweet taste, almost too sweet, but a nice balance. Rated 12-20-2021

Poured into a Reuben's Brew small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass with a one finger khaki head that slowly dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, bourbon, oak, dark dried fruit and mild cocoa.Flavor is dark toasted malt, bourbon, oak, light coffee, dried plums and cocoa. Lingering smoky, oaky bourbon finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I just picked up a bottle of 2022 BBIS and remembered this '21 bottle in the cellar. I'm not aging stouts anymore, but most big and/or cellared ones handle a year just fine. I recalled that this one was a bit hot in the past, so the year seemed fine. As in the past, this is still a bit hot; very bourbon forward. The base malt is nice with classic cocoa, coffee and dark fruit notes, but is rather hidden behind the bourbon. I like the oakiness, which I don't remember from earlier ones. A warm, bourbon forward barreled stout that is a bit unbalanced, but suits my bourbon stout tastes. It's got me curious now, I'm going to see if there's an earlier version of this in the cellar and see if it mellows with a little more time.

L:. Pours a thick black with a very small tan head and no lacing on the glass.

S:. Dark Roasted malt, mixes with a rich milk chocolate and a hint of Raiden and ends with a strong bourbon.

T: Lots of vanilla and bourbon followed by a milk chocolate and then hints roasted malt, the bourbon is a bit overwhelming and could balance better with the rest of the beer.

F:. Slick smooth mouthfeel, large body.

O:. This is a very boozy beer, the bourbon takes over some of the other elements of the beer.
