Tmavétor is our interpretation of the rare Czech Tmavé Speciální 20º, a Czech-style doppelbock brewed with all German malts and hops. Our version is partially fermented in second-use bourbon barrels to accentuate the rich and toasty notes of caramelized sugar, dark fruit and maple in this strong dark lager.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark reddish orange with little light transmission in the glass and a fine, two finger walnut head with great retention and slippery solid lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt, dates, raisins and dried plums. Flavor follows, with dry caramel malt, dates, dry toffee, raisins, well dried plums; mild woody barrel notes in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess. A stellar take on the doppelbock style, with lots of dark dried fruit, particularly dates and a rich malt body. Almost tastes like a hybrid between a Continental dopplebock and the deep malty style of domestic barleywines that are rarely seen in recent times (like the old John Barleycorn from Mad River). I really liked this one. I got the penultimate 4 pack at the brewery and now wish I had taken the last too. Hopefully this will be released again. Rich, flavorful and malty. Excellent.
