Poured from an undated 16 oz. can: clear, brownish-ruby red pour with a foamy and sustained off-white head.
Muted aromas of malt and licorice.
Right after pouring into the glass, the first sip was a bit of shock on bitterness; but then as the ale warms, the malt comes to the fore and balances the hop profile. All in all, still bitter for the style. The flavor is roasted, malty with hints of molasses and licorice. There is no "Irish Curse" here.
This is quite enjoyable, though not quite to style. It reminds me of Great Lakes Brewing's Conway ale: both push the envelope on bitterness and alcohol strength. Glad I bought but not a repeat anytime soon.
