Head production and retention are very good for the style. Brew is surprisingly dark, nearly black.
Nose is impressively fruity, with ginger forefront with the traditional EBW tones of prunes, plums, raisins, caramel, and brown sugar, and lime following quickly thereafter. Rum barrel influence isn't strong; you wouldn't guess it - or any barrel treatment - from the nose alone. Strange ... but pleasant.
Flavor is a similar mashup of flavors, and like the nose, comes together in a surprisingly pleasant melange. Tons of sweet caramel and brown sugar, dark fruit tones, syrup, pineapple, and - thankfully restrained - ginger.
A sweet and tart kiss of lime on the back third is the only impression of that fruit being added; a liquor-like boozy finish is really the only indicator of the rum, which is accompanied on the aftertaste by a grainy sugar echo.
Smooth and silky, with boozy heat from the rum barrels. Very easy to drink.
An absolute delight to drink, but a crazy unique brew overall.
