Huckleberry Hound is a light bodied, sessionable India Pale Ale with a new twist.... HUCKLEBERRIES! Take German Pilsner malt, American hops, an ale yeast strain, northwest huckleberries, artfully brew with them and you will have this amazing beer. This isn’t any wimpy fruit beer; it really is an IPA with 6.5% ABV and 55 IBUs. It is just the perfect beverage to kick off the warm days of summer, whether you are out in the mountains gathering berries or relaxing on the river. Just watch out for the black bears.

Pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma of dark fruits (assume this is the huckleberries!) candy floss and resin. Flavor is basically the same but no sign of a hop finish. Wouldn’t rush out to have it again.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a lightly hazy golden amber color with about a half-inch of off-white head that had OK retention and lacing.
The aroma was fairly sweet, especially for an IPA, with some grain undertones and fairly gentle hops. Taste-wise the beer was a fairly typical IPA, some bitter citrus hops, a bit of grapefruit and some basic grain flavors. I didn't pick up any of the Huckleberries used in the brewing of this beer, and my friend, who also had a pint, only picked up faint traces of the berry.
The body was the average medium of the style. Drinkability was OK, it wasn't a palate wrecker, and it wasn't bland either. Overall, an average take on the American IPA style. Worth a shot if you see it.
