On draught at the brewery. It pours an oily, inky black with a half finger of creamy, khaki-colored head that dissipated quickly leaving and modest film of lacing inside the glass. The decadent aroma offers a heavy dose of anise, along with roasted malt, caramel, freshly-brewed coffee, dark chocolate, and a whiff of raisin. The taste is licorice-forward but it's not overly strong. Behind it there is rich chocolate malt and freshly-brewed coffee. As the glass warms I also detect the dehydrated orange; it's subtle but noticeable. The ale is rich, sweet, and sticky. Its mouthfeel is thick and creamy with a low level of carbonation. It drinks below its 15% ABV. Overall, this variant of Part VIII is exquisite with a wonderful nose and flavor. I was a little concerned about the anise but it's handled deftly. This is a fabulous ale from a brewery that knows how to blend BA Barleywines and Stouts.
