Found this up in Nacogdoches...oh what some time has done to this beer! Chocolate, coffee with just a hint of smoke on the nose. Taste follows thru with a great rich feel. Really nice job from Texas Big Beer. I've read that their beers need time to condition...it definitely shows here!

Doing a formal review of the much maligned Texas Big Beer. Too often are things just described as "meh" or, "this sucks", and I felt like this deserved a formal review. Maybe it isn't as bad as people think. Maybe it is. We shall see. Important to note that this bottle cost me $7.75 for a bomber. Certainly lots of room for value in this beer if it doesn't blow.

Appearance:
Poured from waxed bottle into Jester King stemware. Pours a dark but not completely opaque brown/black color, a little bit of white/tan head comes up off the beer after a rough pour, but dissapates quickly, leaving a thin ring of khaki head around the circumference of the glass. Avg pour, nothing exciting here.

Aroma:
roasty porter chocolate notes, some sort of lactose/milky aroma, ovaltine? No real "white chocolate" to report about, but nothing terribly offensive either. Smells decent, avg porter.

Taste:
Intensely sweet- surprised by this. I didn't detect too much sweetness in this on the aroma. I'm guessing this is where the "white chocolate" plays in this beer, but it comes across as artificial and the beer desperately needs a drier finish. It is cloying and distracting, and this beer had a little bit of promise that this is detracting from. It actually kills the beer for me and makes me unable to drink another glass of it. I'm thinking if they didn't add whatever they did to accomplish their "white chocolate", they might have had a drinkable, albeit average porter.

mouthfeel:
thin, decent carbonation.

Overall, its a little bit what I expected, with some beer killing flaws.

Served from a bomber into a dogfish head goblet.
Pours a nice dark coffee color, with a light brown head.
Nose has hints of chocolate.
Taste, a strong porter taste, coffee notes, with hints of sugar, and subtle hints of chocolate. Couldn't really differentiate white chocolate flavor from a chocolate flavor.
Light on the pallet, with some small bubbles and alcohol after bite.
Over all a solid porter.

This bottle features the most pathetic attempt at waxing a cap I've ever seen. 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with an appealing green label and an unbranded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a local Texas bottle shop and served into an Avery stem-tulip in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are average; I think this is the first beer I've ever had from this brewery. "The base style is a robust porter." No ABV is listed on the bottle. Reviewed as a porter.

Served cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Smooth consistency. Head retention is average - about 2 minutes. Little lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Body colour is an opaque solid black. Not quite a jet black. No yeast particles/sediment is visible. I don't notice any obvious flaws. Not a unique or special appearance, but I'm looking forward to trying the beer.

Sm: Mint family herbs. Cool spearmint. Dark malts. Chocolate malts. I'm not getting identifiable white chocolate even though I walked into this expecting to find it. It's certainly sweet and sugary, but not chocolatey. It's a pretty simple aroma overall, but a pleasant one.

No hop profile, yeast character, or alcohol is detectable.

Average in strength.

T: Chocolate malts, spearmint/mint herbs, dark malts, and plenty of accompanying sweetness. White chocolate? Not so much. If it's there, it isn't distinct - at least not in a Hershey's sense.

No hop profile, yeast character, or overt alcohol comes through.

Overall, this is a shockingly simple porter with little to offer the discerning drinker. Has a shallow depth of flavour and a low intensity of flavour. Duration of flavour is average. Lacks balance, but it's cohesive enough. It's pretty murky; none of the notes ring distinct here. Lacks any complexity, intricacy, complexity, subtlety, or nuance whatsoever. I can find little to like here, but that's unsurprising as it offers very little. I at least expected some obvious white chocolate, but this doesn't even deliver that.

Mf: Smooth, wet, and lightly creamy. This should be luscious and smacky and extremely creamy, but it isn't. Should be softer. Thick, medium-bodied, and filling. Not comforting or refreshing. Should be heavier on the palate (provided there was more flavour). Overall, presence on the palate is subpar. This texture is far from ideal for a porter. Not the silky goodness you find in the best examples of the style.

Not oily, astringent, gushed, hot, boozy, or harsh.

Dr: Bland disappointing stuff from Texas Big Beer (and while we're at it, contrary to the brewery's epithet this beer is far from "big"). I'll kill the bottle alone without issue, but I'm very overwhelmed and won't be in a hurry to purchase this brewery's other beers. I'd caution friends against picking this up. Very boring. Ultimately, it just doesn't deliver on its premise. There's little to like here. At best, it feels like the kind of thing you'd find in a Sam Adams winter box.
