DATE: October 10, 2020... OCCASION: a beautiful sports-and-yardwork kind of day, punctuated by a fitting flavor of Autumn... GLASSWARE: HopDevil nonick... pours as one expects: absolutely dense swamp water turbulence, its dark, blunted golden yellow body supporting a foamy, smear-inducing two fingers of white head... tough to say one is impressed with the NE or milkshake IPA genre's appearance when two-thirds of the glass is completely opaque... its immediate aroma of orange, vanilla, light clove and nutmeg, cracker and toffee sweetness... a "wall of smell," as Brian Eno or the Edge might call it... a nice, smooth sipper, creamy yet rather medium-bodied for a 5.7% ABV... the aftertaste remains long after the sip does, while the buzz at the teeth is also noticeable... overall, agreeable and sippable... the "autumn" flavors might not pronounce themselves in a clear tongue; instead, cinnamon and nutmeg come through only after the base vanilla and orange wash over the drinker... the toffee and cracker sweeten the finish, with a huge creamsicle impact that makes this a milkshake for sure.... not so sure this season makes the best milkshake--hard fruits like apple and pear are here, mincing with allspice... a dessertif that doesn't fully deliver--but it still is an enjoyable experience overall... and one appreciates Bolero Snort's ambitious attempts...

I haven't seen any Bolero Snort beer in quite a while, so it was surprising to find this and another (more normal) IPA show up out of seemingly-nowhere on shelves at my local beer store. I've only had a few of their brews, but I was happy with those I tried despite the silly concept behind the brand and the sometimes-ridiculous ideas they come up with and execute. However, with a few leaps of faith, I discovered that they're actually usually pretty good at pulling off what they want claim to be doing on the labels, which is more than some other high-concept brewers can claim. As you could have guessed from those last few sentences, this is a weird one: a milkshake IPA brewed with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and clove. I really like almost everything Fall-spiced, so let's see how they do with this.
The pour here is quite nice with an opaque, light-orange colored beer with a small-ish collar of bone-white foam leaving behind some gorgeous lacing as it slowly dissipates. Seemingly some nice carbonation activity in this one, and nice legs to boot. Overall a pretty great appearance, and it gives me hope that the rest of the beer will be of high quality, too.
Smells of eggnog-like spices right upfront with a lot of the allspice and clove crowding out some of the more subtle spicing. Slight tropical hops and a touch of ripe citrus fruit (tangerine and white grapefruit). Definitely some coconut and pineapple in here, some light mango, and a slight herbal note that starts getting to the interesting parts of this beer. I mean, it's all basically what's written on the tin so far, right? But, to get into the leafy, herbal, even dirty/earthy side of things especially with spice involved is really cool. Hopefully that element comes across on the palate.
Flavor profile is a lot of pineapple and coconut with some citrusy hops and plenty of unusual spice notes around the edges. Slightly grainy in the mid-palate, especially as it warms a touch. Crisp and autumnal. Very weird, but quite fun and enjoyable, honestly, as well. I appreciate that this actually does feel like a well-brewed, heavily-attenuated IPA with some odd ingredients, and that it all comes together well enough for me to enjoy it. The vanilla is pretty heavy-handed here, but I suppose that makes sense given the "milkshake" thing going on. I mean, it probably isn't necessary (as just making a "Fall-spiced NEIPA" would've been innovative enough right there, but... whatever), and it doesn't really hurt the beer, but those who dislike vanilla/lactose/other stuff of that sort in their beers will want to steer clear.
