Formerly Maibock Roadbock.

This annual release is brewed in celebration of the coming of spring and Cincinnatl's Bockfest. Maibock, or Helles Bock, is the paler, drier, and most quaffable version of the traditional bock styles. German specialty malts provide a rich and textured malt flavor while peppery hops provide balance. Expect a beer light in color with a drinkability and flavor reminiscent of a stronger Helles or Festbier.

Poured from a 12-oz can two months after its filling date into a goblet.

Look: Cloudy orange-yellow gold, with a massive fluffy off-white head with pretty good retention, and leaving adequate lacing.

Nose: Lightly toasted malt, cracker, and a bit of white pepper and orange peel.

Taste: The attack is nicely sweet-malt-forward, following the nose but with more intensity. The dry finish nicely balances things out.

Mouthfeel: Medium thick, near perfect carbonation.

Overall: Though Fifty West is a credible brewery, I honestly wasn’t expecting a Maibock this good. I’m really enjoying the flavor, am glad I bought a six-pack of it, and expect to again next year. It’s hard to beat Ayinger’s Maibock, but for a local brewery, this is a fine offering. Nice work, Fifty West!

Pours a shiny copper color with a foggy translucency. Head is two and a half fingers of dense off-white foam. Aroma is mild bread, banana, clove, and zesty yeast. There is a squeeze of grassy hops, but it's minor. Slight cleaner note underneath everything. Flavor profile is bread, banana, nuts, caramel, and fig. Soft clove and fruity, zesty yeast seep into the mix at the halfway point, adding with it just a little extra sweetness. Balance from start to finish is good, despite ending on a mild dry note. Never overly sweet, nor potent, making for an easy sipping beer. Mouth feel aids in this easy sipping experience, with a medium thickness and a crushed velvet texture that provides just enough neppiness to not be completely still. Overall, a fine Maibock. Easy drinking with a non-nuased, straight-forward nose and taste.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegelau tulip from a 12oz can.

Enjoyed from a growler from the brewery. This nice maibock pours a clear light reddish brown with a nice white head that dissipates to a thin ring and spotty lacing. Nose of sweet caramel and toffee malts, light toast, and faint light citrus and peach. Flavors are crisp sweet caramel malts, a hint of toffee, some light sweet bread flavors, very light floral hops in the back, and a light apricot like flavor. Lively mouth feel with solid carbonation. A hint of citrus. Very nice. An excellent lager from a great little brewery.

Cheers!
