I checked with the brewer. This is not the Vanilla Brown Ale that has been retired. This is brewed with oak chips but no vanilla.
Deep dark brown color where the light does pass...barely. Beige head that settles to rim bubbles. Some spots for lace.
Rich, creamy nose with an almost buttery smell.
This beer starts with dark, nearly burnt malts. This provides bittering balance as the sweeter elements become stronger. The aftertaste brings back the black patent malt burnt flavor. The combination works. There's a chewy texture to the body and the carbonation is muted. The oak chips do bring a vanilla touch.
