Bullfinch British Pale Ale

Received a clear orange brew with some rising bubbles from the tap. The head was dense and had a bit of a creamy element.

Mild hoppiness and some grain and malt in the nose.

Malt is a bit lean in this one. Wants to be a bit sweeter or a bit more complex. Biscuit, grain, some moderate hop bitterness. A little watery. Finishes fairly clean. Some fruit, but not much.

Medium bodied, but a little thinner than I'd like.

Overall, ok, but not like the traditional stuff you get from the UK. Hits some high points but lacks some others.

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer has a slow cascade, finishing off as a bright, crystal clear, golden yellow coloring with a dense, creamy, off-white head of about an inch. Aromas of buttery biscuit and peppery hops, with a caramel sweetness hidden throughout. Flavors are sweet and toasty, with the tangy caramel sweetness balanced by a subtle roasy/toasty bread character. Hops are present towards the end of the palate, but more subtle, with a pepper spicing. Very smooth bodied, with a clean, slightly bitter finish. More of the tangy sweetness than anything else in the aftertaste.

 

Gorgeous thick, creamy head. Surprisingly little lace given the beauty of the head. Clear. Deep gold color.

Sour aroma, distracting from the style.

The sourness continues in the taste--not what I expected. It doesn't have the British elements. Good neutral bitter finish. The body is lower than some Bitters but that may be from the elevated carbonation.

Man, I love watching nitro-tap beers separate. In all honesty, it was a really, quite nice British pale ale.

Poured the foamy white color before it searated then it slowly became a perfectly clear amber. Nose was very simple and full of malts. Flavor was fairly straitforward. Nothing crazy going on. Could taste (and feel) the malts in this beer. Hops gave the beer a slight green tone. Also, a little bit doughy. Full, wet mouthfeel. Heavy too. Nice session beer.

I have been going to BBW fairly regularly since they opened near Fenway 10 yrs ago. The Canal location is a lot more convenient for me. It seems that over the last 6-12 mos., they have really stepped out and started to make some different style beers. Belgian golden tripels in the Summer and when they put the Fenway pale on-cask are noticeable improvements to a somewhat homogeneous batch of beers before then. I will also say that I am impressed with BBW for how often their offerings change. So onto the Bullfinch Pale...

A-very pretty orange/apricot/peach color with a fluffy thick looking head of 5mm.
S-very strange--almost astringent-like smell but it dies down quickly. It really is just a clean, dry smell---nothing too unpleasant.
T-smooth and creamy--very drinkable truly tastes as it is billed-a British pale ale. There is a slight fruitiness in the dry --clean tasting finish.
MF-pleasant and dry--not much more than that.
D-Extremely smooth and drinkable. This is the type beer that you can have over and over. I hope its available the next time I go in. Also, it pairs well with a wide variety of food.
