Got two whips at the penny candy store with this one on 3/17/2005. . 16-oz. pint pour at the Fenway location.
Root beer float of huge bubbled, loose, flocular froth of uncoordinated plume that settles restlessly. Black, black, black, black, black hue with just a touch of brown at the base and impenetrable. Overdue for an oil change burping chocolate malt and formaldehyde on nose with some roasted oat. Liquid blackberry juice on mouth is groan-inducing, flavor reminiscent of envelope glue frags the tongue; licorice is in there somewhere, but it may be acting as a detriment. Very light, helium-filled body. Not sure what they were trying to do with this.

Had this one at a recent stop at the Fenway Beer Works and to me it looks like a pretty limited offering. Love the hand pumped tap from the cask. It was appropriately served at room temp. It poured with a smallish but creamy head and a very deep auburn body with a small reddish tint. The nose is sweetly malty but weak. The mouthfeel is incredibly creamy and silky...worth the price of admission in my mind. Its amazingly balanced with a smooth, kind of mellony and chocolatey in one. An extremely juicy presence. It finishes a little sweetly and ah! there's some licorice. Its muted but appropriate for this offering. I really liked this one. Awesome brew.
