Growler filled at the Salem brewpub location.
Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/8" short-lived beige head over the clear reddish amber brew. Head is gone in a flash, but still laces rather well, surprisingly. Aroma is sweetly malty, with an almost fruity vinousness lingering as well. Taste starts with sweet malt, but quickly give way to hearty yet no overpowering hops character, and closes with a mild alcoholic warming. Mouthfeel is okay, would benefit from more carbonation, and drinkability is good for a strong bitter.

Must have had a bad upbringing with this one on 4/24/2005. 16-oz. pour at the Fenway location, with Carter doing a little head hunting on Big Papi.
Barkeep said it was kind of a cross between a bitter and an IPA, with a ton of malt and double the hops, and pretty high on alcohol too. Not too sure how to categorize this, though it was certainly closer to a bitter than a hop monster. Candy cream 1/8-inch tight foam to start with a generous amount of stick. Very deep copper hue with some haze. Caramel and smoke on nose, to the point of it almost having scotch ale qualities; some clover honey hovering around in the background. Pretty juicy on the mouth with meat from Macoun apples, honey, some oak and butterscotch all tangling about with one another; medium body.
Pleasantly surprised by this one body and character of the ale are comforting, and would happily order another.
