I asked if this beer was closer to smoky or rye. I was told rye, but I disagree. The smoke is upfront and center. From the chalk board: spicy smoky but surprisingly clean.
The liquid is light brown with no apparent haze. Nearly no head. No lasting lace.
The smell is oddly sweet which the taste doesn't show. I also don't pick up any smokiness.
The flavor has plenty of smoke. It's also dry as advertised. There's some caramel to the taste. Little hop bitterness but the rye keeps this balanced. Short smoky aftertaste. A bit of a novelty worth trying if you like Rauchbiers.
