Avoided a bout of scurvy with this one on 5/11/2007. 16 oz. "pint" at Canal St. location.
On the menu as "The quintessential German style of beer for May. Orangey-red in color and full bodied with a big malty sweetness. Lightly hopped with Tettnang hops." Tawny down of 1/2-inch initial head stays set up for a fair amount of time before falling to a pleasant coating with a fair amount of lace. Quite the sparkly orange rose hue with close to 100% clarity and nothing going on. Very malty sweet touch hits the nose right off the bat along with some rose hip, Granny Smith apples and a hint of caramel pulling through. Initial smooth malt kick on the tongue is replaced by a somewhat odd spiciness at the end, like clamato mixed with melon balls. As it warms, a touch of aoky character pops out.
Ehh, not great, not bad.

Had a pint of this to lead-off yesterday while visiting with "The Scheister" for lunch prior to the Sox-M's game....
Came in a "stange" type glass... poured a deep golden/copper hue, and was clear throughout, with steady carbo within. Head was steady at 1/4", off white, creamy and frothy, all the while leaving top-shelf lacing behind. Aroma was light and bready, with a little floral action coming forth. Body was a decent medium, with a fairly smooth feel on the tongue.
Flavor was bready as well, with a light malt sweetness showing up. There's a smidge of a fruity action here, like green apple, though just a hint, really. Flowery hop action comes into play in the dry, crisp finish. Gets better as it warms somewhat. Overall, not bad at all; not the best, but still tasty.
Prosit!

Presentation: On tap.
Appearance: Crystal clear gold with a frothy white head.
Smell: Trace malt sweetness that may be from the alcohol also, leafy hop in the nose also.
Taste: A small punch of solvent like alcohol(vodka), mouthful of grain and on the dry side most of the way through. A hint of honey sweetness and leafy hop are in the finish.
Notes: Quite alcoholic and definitely on the dry side. Complex fusel alcohols make this and interesting Maibock.
