A huge, light beige foam builds dense and creamy. After cascading, the head slowly transitions from six inches to three inches, where it holds for the duration. An uninterrupted veil of lace eventually gives way to a dense webbing. Within the Stiegl stange, the beer is dark mahogany and almost clear, with rich, red highlights (SRM 22-28).
The aroma has a rich, malty sweetness initially, that is followed by a range of toasted malt. Plum and honeysuckle warm to include notes of light pepper and freshly baked pumpernickel rye.
The flavor follows the nose, however, less sweet. Here, plums give way to light anise, with caraway and pumpernickel becoming very prominent. Warmth reveals a pleasant progression. Light bitterness is confined late in a long, mild, roasted malt finish.
The soft, dense texture of fur helps hold the medium body. Carbonation is modest and gentle. Alcohol is present, though dangerously below expectations.
I am enjoying an entire crowler of this by myself while reading. It is two degrees and sunny outside, yet the sky still has an overcast feel due to fine snow in the atmosphere. Tomorrow, a big storm will descend. However, we are prepared with books, blankets, and beer, not to mention a furry little white dog.
