Golden amber (SRM 5-7). The head is modest with a frothy, off-white foam that falls from one inch to a thick ring and a blanket. A webbing of lace form on the Strangebird IIPA glass, while a murky haze fills below.
The aroma has strong grassiness and earthy pine. Faint orange comes out through the middle. Earthiness is dramatic as it builds in this fairly simple beer, which I find to be unusual for an IPA. Warmth brings out mint and possibly onion.
The flavor closely follows the aroma. Modest bitterness borders on the high range. There is some sweetness that, by no means, provides a balance. Pine straw and earthiness continue to be dramatic for the style. The long, dry finish is a muddy reflection of the overall flavors.
Alcohol is well controlled, yet very much present. The body is full and rounded, with the soft texture of wool. Carbonation is modest and fizzy.
Foghorn lives on the edge of American Barleywine territory; however, one would never confuse it as such. It also seems to have the spirit of a West Coast IPA. I enjoyed it before dinner and in anticipation of a cold snowstorm.
