January 2018 Batch, Brewery Description: 9.7% ABV / 21 IBUs Another of our once-a-year offerings. Being winter is ‘Big Beer’ season, we make a traditional Doppelbock and really showcase the caramel and toffee flavors. Once it gets below freezing, a small amount of this beer will become our Eisbock which is by far the most allocated beer we make generally selling out in a matter of hours.

I had two full pours of this at the brew pub with a meal, Then bought a 750ml growler for immediate home consumption.

Look Is dark Burnt Brown, with a Nice light brown head. Smell is Burnt something. Taste is the Same as the smell Burnt something. What is the something? I don't know I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe a cross between slight burnt roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt brown sugar and burnt something else maybe burnt molasses or maple. The taste is the same from start to finish. Straight line it is. If you drink as much as I did you get the same burnt flavor as a after taste that lingers for hours. It kinda misses the mark, Not much of a toffee caramel flavor. No dark fruit flavor for the most part. The beer is smooth. Only slightly sweet. The 9.7 ABV is very well hidden. I would drink it again but only one pour in a day. First Time I have had this beer, unsure what it was like in previous years.

Lets just call this "The burnt roasted malt Bomb"

Northbound Doppelbock arrives a dark brown color. The head is small, but leaves some lacing. The aroma on the lighter side for a doppelbock, but with all the required characters. Toffee and caramel. The taste is a bit more pronounced than the aroma with a lot more toffee. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, with a velvety texture, and appropriate carbonation. I prefer to see a fuller, more chewy body in a doppelbock. Overall, this is a nice beer. It isn't overtly noreworthy, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.
