This traditional lager is brewed with noble hops and Vienna malt from our friends at Proximity Malt. Soft notes of bread crust and toasted malt are balanced by an earthy hop finish. Smooth, balanced, and elegant.

Notes via stream of consciousness: I've had this beer before so I won't do a play-by-play review here. I'll give you the stats but in the end it's just a really well done Vienna lager with a twist. It's 5.5% ABV which is on the higher end, but still true to the style. The color is right on with a deep amber colored body, although it could be even darker, and the only problem with the appearance is that it's lightly hazy. I give it a pass on that for the most part as it's so common in the U.S. these days. The head is a good sized, densely foamy head of white. The aroma expresses grainy and very lightly toasty malt with a waft of spicy and floral hops. It's clean and welcoming. The hops might actually be a little bit higher than they really should be for the style, but again, this is the U.S. and hops are expected. On to the taste, the malt is the dominant character with grain and grass and a touch of toastiness. Some people might think that there's not enough there but I totally get Vienna malt out of it - it shouldn't be caramelish as many expect. Should it be fuller, and more melanoidin-rich? Yes, and no. There's enough there, and when it's all pulled together it works really well. The hops are there, quite clear, and I suspect that they're probably Saaz and Hallertauer Mittelfrüh but I've been wrong before. A second suspicion would be Perle, not that it really matters what's in there, just that it's a bit spicy and lightly floral. Are the hops a bit overdone for the style? Yes, but again, it works. The bitterness is perfectly balanced and it finishes dry but with both malt and bitterness as well as hops. It's really quite elegant, and I have to laugh because that's not generally what sells well these days! In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp, exactly as it should be. Could it be better? Yes, of course, all beers could theoretically be better but it's really nice for what it is. I like that they've put a slight twist on the style because without a little bit of variation every brewery would end up basically making the same beer. It's elegant and complex, really well-balanced, and highly quaffable. I generally think of Vienna lager as more of a fall beer but this reminds me of spring with its floral character, and it's also perfect for summer as it's not quite as malty as so many other versions.
