John Geaghan was raised on the tough streets of Bangor, fought in World War II, and wanted nothing more than to come home and start a family. Geaghan Brothers Brewing Company grew from Dad's dream of a better life for his family. It seems fitting to introduce Dad's Oatmeal Stout on Geaghan's favorite holiday, St. Patrick's Day. Our oatmeal stout is full bodied and silky smooth with coffee-like aromas. Additions of Chimook and U.S. Goldings hops give balance and moderate bitterness to this rich, dark beer.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a black color with a thin white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Moderate lace. The aroma had some coffee roast. Sweet grains, slightly like oats. Balancing milk chocolate. The flavor leans to the sweet side and gently allowing some roast to come in for the balance. Sly roasty aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Moderate carbonation. Nice smoothness on my tongue. Overall, nicely done oatmeal stout that I could come back to.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark brown coloring with ruby highlights and no head. Nose of roasted grains and slight coffee. The flavors are rich and roasty, with toasted cereal backbones and a bitter, roasted coffee character. Roasty and bittersweet aftertaste of coffee and grain, with a filmy, slightly lingering finish. Not bad.

Pint at the restaurant, taken from my limited notes dated 01/27/13.

Pours a dark brown color, good size head, sticks around for a long while, decent layered lacing on the glass.

Smell is heavily roasted malt, fairly straight forward for a malt heavy stout.

Taste is similar to the nose in that the roasted malt controls the flavor profile, oatmeal presence isn't heavy as it's not as creamy as other Oatmeal stouts but the body is better than your average regular stout, carbonation slightly above normal but not distracting, couldn't help but think a nitro-tap would have done wonders for this beer, burnt malt bitterness in the aftertaste is nice for a lasting flavor.
