A smooth red ale infused with Nelson-grown hops and some good old American rye, giving it nutty and spicy notes. Very popular Stateside, it's right up there with baseball and Tom Selleck's moustache.

330ml bottle consumed in Christchurch NZ.

Pours an attractive red-amber color with a decent cone-colored head. Excellent clarity.

Aroma: an enticing smell of sweet varamel malts and some medium roast grains. The hops, which come out clearly upon tasting, are largely hidden in the aroma.

Flavor: A finely crafted mix of a sweet malty ale with a zesty touch of spicy rye and enough NZ hops to lend a mildly bitter herbal hop presence.

O: complex and flavorful but easy drinking. Superb for style and highly recommended. Goes well with spicy Thai food.

Six pack from Henry's in Queenstown. From notes.

A - Poured bright and copper with a one finger tan head. Good carbonation coming up to leave good lace rings and a film of retention.

S - Strong maltiness. Some fruity hop and malt blending together. Nice balance. Not too strong but inviting. A good sweetness is there.

T - Spicy rye is there to start but not too strong. Nice hop and malt balance again. Rye is there but not too strong again. After a while and some warming the rye comes out a lot more and becomes a bit much.

M - Decent carbonation, medium body, decent bitterness.

O/D - A pretty decent red ale, but the rye takes over in a big way after a while. Starts out OK, but getting through a six pack was a bit of a chore.
