Andygator, a creature of the swamp, is a unique high-gravity brew made with pale malt, German lager yeast, and German Perle hops. Unlike other high-gravity brews, Andygator is fermented to a dry finish with a slightly sweet flavor and subtle fruit aroma. Reaching an alcohol strength of 8% by volume, it is a Helles Dopplebock.

In a word, this is what beer should be. It's the amalgam of various types into one brew. Strong enough pure malt that there is no adjuncts interfering in the final product. A perfect example of many different ideas of brewing beer to a point it must be one of Abita's flagships. This beer has it all. It has a very balanced sweetness to hoppiness. It's refreshing and yet full bodied. I can drink several and not feel overloaded, yet strangely wholly satisfied. I think it's highly underrated as the greatest American widely available brew. Other aspects hit all the right notes of color, lacing, mouth-feel, and back tastes. This is a masterpiece of brewing in a world full of wannabes any have outright misses for one reason or another. Abita brewing you are a milepost in a world of almost, close, and outright misguided brewing.

Malty and very smooth. 8% hidden very well. Would give it a 4+ rating if a little less sweet. Overall a good brew.

Received in a trade from Florida. Pours an enticing bright hazy copper color with a thin diminishing head. Pleasant mince pie aroma. Spice, stone fruit, bread. Smooth malt, sweetness, dry finish with lingering spice notes. Moderate mouthfeel with light carbonation. Overall, mightily impressed! This is a really complex and very enjoyable beer!

Strong as the Louisana heat but something also crisp about it

For a craft beer that can be found in any city in the USA, that is 8%, isn't an IPA and tastes amazing considering that is twice as strong as your average American beer... It's hard to beat. For someone that wants to get drunk with half as many beers, this is the one. My only gripe is that it's deceptively sweet.

My go to beer, and heavily on rotation. Great taste and doesn't mess around. If you're looking for a quick buzz with flavor this is it. No IPA hoppiness, more of a stout than a bock, but some sweetness Absolutely perfect beer.

Yeast driven smell and taste with banana, bubblegum, and spice. As other comments have said, this is more like a tripel than a maibock. Dissapointed, but could be good if you’re looking for a Belgian

Visiting the state of Louisiana and Abita Brewing for their Andygator Helles Dopplebock. Now this has been around since 1993, but most likely not as widely available then as it is today. The Abita Brewing Company is still an independent brewer and holding on to their original recipes and methods, which can be a difficult feat these days in the craft beer industry. They hold their own, and their beer is terrific.
At just below room temperature, a medium-strength pour into a pint glass resulted in a 1-finger tightly compacted white foam head, and the color is deep gold/copper. Looks very nice. The head dissipates rather quickly with moderate carbonation fizzing it away. The aroma is quite malt forward, biscuity, toasted bread, sweet malts...almost similar to a Belgian triple lightly sweetened with Candi sugar, although they aren't using it. On the taste, the backbone of this is the bready malts with a very balanced malty sweetness there. Very malt forward flavor. It does have a Belgian Candi sugar sense of sweetness, and the moderate carbonation helps deliver that. I pick up a bit of stone fruit in there, like a mix between red cherry and mulberry. Had a mulberry tree in the backyard growing up, and I get a slight sense of that flavor characteristic drinking this. There's a tartness or sharpness on the backend of the palate as I swallow it. The finish is crisp, refreshing, malty with a slight hoppy bitterness that lingers a bit. Mouthfeel is the higher end of medium-bodied, moderate carbonation distributing flavors around the mouth, initially smooth and on the soft side, then crisp on the finish. This beer is very drinkable, the 8% ABV hidden so very well. It's one to be careful with because the balanced malty sweetness and drinkability of it could get you into big trouble. It does have a Belgian feel to it, which I like a lot, even though they use German yeast and hops. Some true Belgian offerings use German hops as well. I am really enjoying this. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. It is available in the supermarkets in my area, and the price is reasonable for a very good craft beer. Go get ya some!! Cheers!

Clear, amber color. Big, white head. Caramel malt, bread, and dried fruits in the aroma. Moderately sweet taste, with some metallic notes. Not bad.
