Horchata Turbodog is based on one of Abita’s most popular brews, with a definite Latin twist. This robust dark ale is brewed with pale, caramel and chocolate malts, then fresh cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans are added during aging giving it a traditional horchata flavor. This gives the brew a rich body, dark color and deep flavors of chocolate, toffee, cinnamon and vanilla.

22oz bottle. Poured out a semi-opaque, brown color with a good-sized, tan head of foam. It smelled of vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate. Strong vanilla and cinnamon taste with a touch of caramel and chocolate.

Pours clear, chestnut brown in color with one inch head. Taste is brown sugar, Christmas sugar cookie, cinnamon, and vanilla. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, and sweet. Interesting and complex sweet stout. Glad I was able to get to try this one.

$ 4.23 (Including tax)/capped bomber ($ 0.192/oz) from State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD.
Bottle stamped “Best by 10/05/18” on the base of the neck, stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand-washed and hand-dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.75.
Body – Dark brown, opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, high density with rocks, good retention, slowly diminishing to an irregular four to six mm ring and a thin complete layer.
Lacing – Thick bands of tiny to small bubbles.
First pour – Medium brown, clear. Second pour is hazy toward the end.
Aroma – 4 – Roasted malt, cinnamon, vanilla.
Flavor – 4 – Begins with a light taste of roasted malt, cinnamon, and vanilla, well-balanced and nothing trying to dominate. Ends slightly bitter with some vanilla aftertaste. Very well done. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 4 – Pleasing appearance, enticing aroma, well-balanced taste with enough vanilla to actually taste, nice palate. Cheap at twice the price.

On tap:
Pours a dark brown, like a porter. Beige head keeps a thick collar and thin surface coverage and provides some lacing.
Nose is light at the bar, but I do get cinnamon and vanilla and a little ginger root or root beer like spice. It’s been a while but that could be the base beer effect as I recall it.
Taste has an earthy base combined with that ginger/root note. The cinnamon hits next with a little more spice than the opening but also more earthy notes. A little bite comes in back as vanilla presses from the edges to the middle of my palate.
I enjoyed this beer, and I enjoy the base beer as an oddball take on an English Brown. This works well, though 2 might be my limit in a session.
