its almost like how do you improve on the reverend right? its such a classic, nearly perfect beer, but these george dickel barrels really do pop it off. on tap at acorn in the source, i think they might make this one just for them, at least thats what the server said. nothing real impressive to look at, hazy woody almost milky amber in the glass, tons of sediment, we must be nearing the bottom of the keg, as both of our glasses were not even the same color, but it didnt bother us after a sip. huge sweet bourbon flavors coming through the dark fruity malt base, and a warming alcohol presence all the way through it thats very comforting. i think it loses some of its belgian-ness to the barrel. not as vibrant and flavorful on the yeast front as the base beer is, but its replaced by vanilla and oak and char and a hint of maple syrup that really works. smooth and easy drinking for how big it is, less sweet in the end than it is in the middle, and really showing the bourbon through all the way. maybe not an improvement on reverend generally speaking, but an awfully delicious twist on it. definitely worth going in there to try. they should bottle it too...
