Vienna Lager should have the nickname "toasted lager" because of its darker, caramelized color and the savory toasted flavors and aromas that it brings.
Avery's Session Vienna Lager pours with that deep golden, and slightly bronzen browned color, and capped with a firm off-white cap. Its floral upstart is remiss with honeysuckle and a soft floral bouquet. But to taste, its supple malt sweetness carries a nutty, toasty and overall elegant, fresh grain profile.
Though the lager washes the palate with its juicy malt sweetness, it remains moderately light and highly drinkable. Bread crust, cashew and its bready-sweet undertow hovers just under the caramel threshold but gives glimpses into a toasted honey character. With a soft peppery hop balance and the minty, grassy character that follows, the lager delivers just enough bitterness to offset the bulk of residual malt in its waining flavors.
Medium-light on the palate, the lager finishes malty-dry, crisp and clean despite retaining remnants of toasted bread and mild sweetness. A return of floral hops and a pepper, bread aftertaste keeps its understated culinary art alive for the senses.
