avery seems to have a monopoly on tequila barrels right now. they have to have four or five beers in their taproom with tequila right now. pretty cool because you dont see a lot of it. this is one of my favorites of the lot. its a dark sour with plenty of time in tequila barrels. dark brown with some red highlights in the right light, and not a lot of head but some bubbles on the edges of the angular glassware they serve it in at the brewery. the nose is amazing, really incredible. sharp lacto sourness with an amazing rush of quality tequila, woody and lush at the same time. there is a lot of other things going on too, hints of chocolate malt, red berries, brett, and lemon, but the tequila and the acid are what stand out. they were smart to do this in a darker beer, i think the richer bigger more layered grain base really gives the tequila some legs to stand out. its a touch sweet, but the wild cultures have done away with most of the sugar. the flavor of the spirit is fresh and bright, redolent of a mexican cocktail, refreshing even though this is a very slow sipper. kind of odd, never really had this experience in a beer before. the flavors come together really well. its super sour, but better carbonated than expected, and not sour for the sake of sourness, it really has flavor there, a touch on the vinegar side, but with the bubbles it feels alive and special. a very unique beer in a special series from avery. i wish they would bottle this one, its sensational!
