one of the more inventive beer i have ever had from these guys. this is a blood orange belgian quad aged in bourbon barrels, and its fantastic. seems in theory like there would be too much going on here, but its really a bunch of complimentary flavors, and they have the proportions dialed right in. looks a little thin, dark honey colored to light brown, pale for a quad as i know them, and not much head, definitely has that relaxed barrel aged look to it. the nose is awesome, pungent and fresh on the blood oranges, really true to the fruit and a little sharp, zesty for sure. the base quad seems light to me in the nose, a little sweet grain, but not as layered as some. the bourbon is up front too, and the vanilla and oak aromas really rock with the fruit in a unique way. the flavor is similarly delicious, there is some molasses or honey sweetness to the grain, giving the beer a really long life on the palate. the fruit is there all the way, tangy and ripe, really juicy. odd to have a fruited quad, you dont see to many of those, especially with citrus, but this is a great success. the barrel really unites the elements, and they were smart to not go to heavy with the grain, its more delicate that way and some of the nuance really shows through. smooth but somehow light on the feel, never revealing its strength either. one of the more creative and successful beers ive ever had from avery. they should package this one.
