this is a great new one from avery, cool they put at least a little bit of it into cans. coffee ipa has become a popular thing to make, but often times its more hyperbole than actually a style description, with less hoppy beers being pushed as ipa, rarely do the hops and the coffee share the stage this well, which is immediately what i love about this one. its cool its so strong too, you dont notice it at all, but i will say that the flavor of the coffee in this one is awesome, i wonder what they use in terms of the specific coffee and how its added, but its darn close to perfect. there is a nice hop bitterness, not really a coffee bitterness at all, instead i get a nice dry roast and some rich chocolate tones from the java, actually really compatible with the hops, the two go together expertly well in this beer, and in a lot of ways, its a new fermented standard for the relationship between these two ingredients. its dry, not malty at all, and very well carbonated, easy drinking for what it is, a hint of sweeter chocolate in the coffee up front, leafy hops later on, its a great transition, and really pretty satisfying, especially in winter. i think this is one of the best not barrel aged beers avery has put out in some time, i hope they keep making it, really outstanding!
