hazy copper orange thin tan head. Nose has fair amount of ripe cherry, decent bit of wood, notes of red wine an lightly tannic, lactic acid in back, plum pits. Taste is more lactic, faintly acetic in back. Fruits are more muddled, cherry, dark grape, almost candied, and some plum pit. Note of olive in the lingering light to moderately sour finish. Body is a touch oily, light and well carbonated for easy drinking. Flavored aren't extremely bright, they have a fair amount of depth but slightly flabby. Decent stuff.

Cloudy dark amber with a moderately sized khaki colored head. Nice retention and appropriate stick. Very pretty.

Complex, evolving aroma, especially as the beer warms. At initial temperatures, the yeast and lactic sour character is most present, but as it warms interesting notes of cherry, plum, and apple combine. Good oak presence as well, but I wouldn't name a particular spirit.

The flavor is a nice combination of funky yeast, fruit character, oak, and a moderate to high level of sourness. Complete, very drinkable, and the alcohol is remarkably well hidden.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation; dry finish.

Bottle pour at the 2012 Peter Reeves Memorial Sourfest at Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a murky honey brown with a foamy white head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some malt, wood, and wine aromas. Taste is much the same with only a mild sourness. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Lots of carb, tiny tight bubbles. Clear amber body. No lacing, no retention.

Smell of blueberry, BlackBerry, some light lactic and acetic acid nature. Grapes, light oak tannins.

Perfect tartness, cherries, raspberry. Finishes acetic.

Full bodied. Crisp. Light puckering. Great great great great. Amazing.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a snifter. Thanks to bauermj for bringing this over.

Appearance: The beer is a amber brown color with a big white frothy head. Great retention on the cap, and a bit of lace sticks to my glass.

Smell: A bit of caramel, lots of dark cherry and lemon zest.

Taste: The flavor starts with a smooth sweetness, with a bit of dark cherry and lemon zest give me a tart, lactic, and slightly acetic sour flavor.

Mouthfeel: If anything, this is a bit overcarbonated. Bubbly carbonation kind of overwhelms my tongue and distracts from the taste. The body is on the light side, and there is a lactic acidity as well. A bit grainy as well.

Overall: This was a definitely a solid sour. Avery makes some interesting sours for sure.

Lee from The Brick Store Pub was kind enough to pull this from their cellar and share with my wife and I. Poured into an Ola Dubh tulip. I believe there was only one release of this beer, looks like it was bottled on 9/18/09.

Review from notes from July of this year.

A - Very nice clarity with a good rocky head. The brew is a light golden bronze color leaving nice lace behind on the glass.

S - Super sour and funky... this was exactly what I was hoping it to be. Loads of horse blanket, pseudo-gueuze types of aromas waft up at you, likely the result of the creative combination of barrels that went into this brew. The Cabernet comes through especially well, lending some mild cherry aromas to the beer.

T - I was immediately wowed by the smoothness of the caramel malt sweetness in this beer. Tart cherry and granny smith apples round things out with a crisp sourness that never gets out of control. As the beer sat a bit, I was also getting more subtle hints of golden apples - sweet and light. Nice example of balance in a wild is shown in Sui Generis.

M - Not overly dry. Ultimately a very smooth-drinking sour.

O - I liked this a lot, an awesome wild. Avery really knows their way around these types of beers.

12oz into a RR tulip...

Pours a hazy amber with a big head. I mean big. Like Duvel big. A moderate amount of bubbles coming up from the bottom.

Smells like vinous grapes, pears, and a bit of astringency. Lots of wine influence in this one, basically smells like a fruity white zinfandel that had gone bad in the barrels.

Pears, melon, granny smith apples, grapes and a citrus like sour greets you first. No sweetness or alcohol in the flavor, but a little bit of a drying/burn from the acidity that really brings out the fruit aspects of this beer. However, at this age I don't think it's as fruit forward as it once was. Possibly past it's prime? I don't know, this is my first Sui Generis...

Mouthfeel is a bit dry. Medium carbonation and a medium body mouthfeel.

Overall, a good beer. Great pear flavor. I wouldn't seek it out again simply due to it's rarity, but if given the chance I'd try it again.

Bottle: Poured a lightly reddish cloudy color ale with a large foamy head with good retention. Aroma consists of vinous notes with some lightly sweet port notes and a clear tart finish. Taste is a complex mix between some vinous notes with a subtle sweet undertones and a well balanced tart finish. Body was quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed and assembled with a balanced mix between the different flavors.

12oz bottle poured in my Hitachino tasting glass.

A- Big head, about 2 inches, huge Head retention, pillowing, crazy lacing all around the glass. Dark blonde to light amber in color that has solid clarity.

S- Beautiful brett nose, funk, fruitiness with light clove and citrus.

T- Wonderful sour and oak flavor. Well balanced with the tart spiciness and acidity with funk.

M- Solid mouthfeel, great acidity, love all these different bacteria

Overall- Great beer, aged well, I could smell this all day.

Bottle received in a trade from gn0sis, thanks Eric! Shared at our recent La Crosse sour tasting and split with friends:

A - Rich gold and amber. Creamy foam head. Great lacing and head retention.

S - Peaches, apricots and lemon. Nice mized wine flavors and funk. Just the slightest hint of bourbon.

T - Grapes, apples, cherries and strawberries. Great wine flavors. Oak and a bit of vanilla. Lemon and lime, sherry, port and just a feel of bourbon. Wonderful!

M - Creamy and sharp. Crisp and very well balanced. The carbonation is really well done here.

O - One of my favorite sours to date. This one is great in all aspects and just amazing how many flavors there are. I'd like a case of this. Worth trying a seeking out.

(12oz bottle generously shared by Mike!). Bottled on September 18, 2009. Pours clear amber with off-white head. Aroma is boozy with some tart cherries and other pit fruit. Taste has a sweet malt backbone with some tartness, but not very much. Medium bodied with a slick finish. Compared to a couple other sours we had, this was a bid boozy although it was still pretty nice.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of a great CO trader, poured in to a tulip as I near my 1200th review.

Appearance: Pours a cherry pit rouge, hazily chilled sweet tea, Georgia-style, glassy and heat mirage-like with dissolved sugar. A pour of modest intensity at best caused a taupe head of mammoth proportions to burst forth, liberated from its 12 oz. prison, rising to a height of three and a half fingers tall. The rocky, dense monstrosity had remarkable staying power, courtesy of a plethora of effervescence. I may be overstating how zippy, fast, and plentiful the carbonation is, because it's all originating on the back of the "Bruery" logo on the side of my tulip - the single nucleation site may be concentrating the forces of the gassy, if you will, but either way, it's pretty breathtaking in appearance. What really brings it all together is the stick, though - crisp, snowy streaks of faintly off white ice cling adamantly to the sides of the tulip, and even successive sips do little to lessen their grip. Great color, great stick, great head, great bubble activity - what more do you want?

Aroma: Sweet and sour and spicy, this is one inviting brew. Cherries, dates, and raisins mingle with ruddy port and cabernet notes, and springy apples, pears, and nectarines mingle with lighter grape notes. The tartness here could be courtesy of the base beer, or it could be largely vinous in nature - I can't quite tell from the aroma as it stands - but it mingles well with an underlying roasted sweetness, bready, with hints of caramel and glassy toffee.

Taste: I didn't like it as much at first, but I'm really digging the complexity of this one now, particularly as it warms. First of all, this beer isn't about any one flavor aspect. It's an insanely robust beer that's all over the place in terms of flavors, light to dark, sweet to savory, tart to saccharine, bright to heavy. And while I at first thought that it was a bit of a mishmash and a jumble of flavors, I'm beginning to get a lot of interplay now that I didn't detect before.

First, the base beer. It's admittedly a little hard to tease it out, particularly because (at least, I think because) so many of its characteristics are augmented particularly well by the barrel aging. But what is obvious are some toffee and caramel malt notes, as well as a few dark and stone fruit notes. If I had to peg it to a style, I'd suggest that it was an Imperial Amber or light Belgian Dark Strong of some kind. The tartness on this one is fairly lactic, though there's a fair amount of funk dancing around in here - both interplay nicely with the other components here, the former with the fruit notes of the base beer (and wine additions) and the latter with the malts (and the spirit additions).

And ah, the barrels. The barrels! Understandably (based upon their respective percentages), the wine notes are stronger, and why shouldn't they be? This is a sour, and the tartness associated with wine is a perfect companion to the tartness imparted by wild yeast. I'll admit I find it a little difficult to tease apart the Chardonnay from the Cabernet, though that's likely the immaturity of my palate rather than the confusion of this brew - there is something here that tastes decidedly plummy that I can only assume is Cabernet, but also a (slightly stronger) quantity of grassy, herbal fruitiness, reminiscent of sour apples and pears. The port is perhaps the most noticeable spirit in attendance, contributing a tawny (note: is that adjective ever not used to describe port?) dried fruity presence suggestive of figs, spice, wood, smoke, and raisins - you can imagine which of these augment the tartness and maltiness of the base beer. And then the bourbon, largely lost in the scuffle here, but nonetheless bringing the slightest amount of sweetness and spice (and indeed, it is nice) to the party.

Mouthfeel: The softest, most delicate beer I've ever sipped, hands down. It doesn't sublimate off the tongue like a Belgian strong - it's literally a cloud from the moment it enters the mouth, floating in to the mouth, above the tongue, and then down the gullet smoothly, cleanly, and crisply. There's really not too much to say about it - just fantastic.

Drinkability: I was shocked to read that this was 10.2%. Sure, sours are good at covering up alcohol burn, but this beer isn't overwhelmingly or particularly sour, not to mention that the alcohol presence in barrel aged brews is typically enhanced, not subdued. But here I sit, dumbfounded at the smoothness and maturity of this brew. I'm not sure what makes it work as well as it does, but this one's my favorite of the (admittedly young) year thus far, and I truly hope it's one Avery brings back - it's the best beer they've ever made, in my opinion.

Avery Sui Generis has a dark, copper-colored body that is orange at its core. The off-white head recedes fairly quickly, but manages to leave some lacing on the glass.

The aroma has some light sourness, all kinds of wild yeasts, and a ton of vinous notes. A good bit of fruitiness too, a lot of which is white grapes from the wine. Bits of oak also.

I know this suggestion stands true for most sours, Sui Generis really needs to be consumed a cellar temperature or even room temperature. This bottle was served to me cold, and I had to wait for it to warm up before the flavors opened up. The first thing I notice is a good bit of light fruit from the yeast, paired with white grapes that stand out as coming from the chardonnay barrel aging that part of this beer experienced. Next comes a good bit of sourness, a slight acidic edge and some brett flavor. Woody flavors from the oak are noticeable also. The finish has just a hint of bourbon and is rather nice. As I work my way through this beer I really start to notice the influence of cabernet sauvignon and port barrel aging. The port brings a desert wine type of dark fruit flavor the the beginning with light figs and plums, and the cabernet grapes creep up toward the end of the beer. Overall, Sui Generis reminds me more of a good geuze than many of the American Wild Ales that I have come across.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly carbonated.

There is really no way to tell that this beer is over 10% ABV. It is a great sipping beer. Complex as hell and very tasty, I recommend grabbing a bottle of Sui Generis if it crosses your path.

Bottle at the Brick Store.

Pours a hazy amber color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of good amounts of funk with solid amounts of pear and white oak. The chardonnay barrel aromas are most prevalent while the cab barrels provide a bit of depth. I don't get much of the bourbon or port influence.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Robust funky flavors are backed by slight pale malt and slighter wheat twang to kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter is a good amount of oak influence - chard and cab as with the aroma - that dries out the flavor profile a good deal. Very slight amounts of deep and sweet dessert wine make a brief appearance before giving way to slightly tart fruit and funk to carry through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was the most balanced of the Avery barrel-aged series that I've had (Black Tot is the lone escapee). Very much worth a shot if you see it around.

Clear robust copper with amber and orange highlights. Good ecru head with pretty organic lace.

Funk plus Sour plus Fruit. Sour dark fruit. grapes, currants, cherries. Sour Apple. Earthy wood and funky herbal spiciness.

Earthy wood, spicy herbal. Sour apples, currants, cherries, white grapes, red grapes. Peppery funk. Sweet vanilla caramel and clove. nice bitterness that cuts some of the sour. Complex as fuck. Can taste the flavors of the different blends (cab sav, chard, port, and bourbon barrels).

Drying, semi rich med body. high carbonation cuts some of the body though. some puckering.

A very interesting and complex blend. 3 yeasts and 4 different barrel types. Doesnt taste anywhere near 10.20% ABV.

Poured into Lost Abbey Tulip.

Pours a big white head. Fades down. Decent retention. Nice lace. Color is a brown hued orange.

Aroma: Huge wine and grape flavors. Red grapes. Oak, light vinegar. Tart notes with a bit of brett.

Taste: Wow, this is all wine and funk/sour notes. Grapes with oak and spice notes. Light funk. Not overly sour. Cherry flavors. Brett and floral hints as well.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy and funky. Medium bodied with a higher amount of carbonation. Ends with sour medicinal flavors.

Overall, a nice sour from avery. Very good wine flavors. No port or bourbon, however. Pretty drinkable, but a bit fizzy for me.

Bottle. Pours a sort of pinkish hued brown color absent of any sediment. Has a nice big fluffy white head that laces on the glass as the head settles. Lots of wine type aromas in the nose; grapes and barrels with some sour/tart notes. The taste is tart upfront that then transitions to some medicinal Brett flavors with an overall flavor of Chardonnay. Light mouthfeel with just a touch of too much carbonation. Not bad, ends cleanly.

Somewhat hazed dark orangey color, small head leaves some lace. Big funkiness in the nose, bretty, wet leather with some more subtle cheesy notes. Light tart fruit component, like under-ripe apples, cherry. In the taste, good compexity. More fruit here... tart orchard fruit, apple and semi-tart cranberry, approaching an almost chutney-like character with a bit of a brown sugariness combining with barrel(s) impact, oak, leading to a dry wine-like finish. Didn't think that this was 10.2% as I was drinking it. Glad to have tried it, thanks for the chance!

A: Pours a deep amber with a good amount of visible carbonation and a good amount of head that sticks around throughout.

S: Nice, funky Brett hits me first off. Afterword, some good sour notes with some cherries and plums.

T: Not as complex as the nose. Sourness and funk with hints of fruit.

M: Medium body with fairly light carbonation. Some tannins but not too many.

D: Overall, very drinkable. The first really solid beer that I've had from Avery in a while.

Thanks to Jeff (ipa247) for this one. Poured from a 12oz. bottle dated 9/18/09 into a tulip and shared with schen9303.

A: Pours a dense, 4 finger pinkish-cream head that never seemed to dissipate. Beer is a cloudy, tinted reddish-clay. Lacing is patchy and thick with great legs.

S: Nose is oaky, subtley sweet cherry, slightly vinegary, wood, and vanilla in the back. Not the most aromatic but pleasant with a characteristically wild smell.

T: Cherry, raspberry, cranberry dry and tartness. Great balance between the sour and fruitiness. Sweet vinegar and oaky vanilla develops as the brew warms. Dry, acrid finish with a slightly bitter, yeasty aftertaste that lingers.

M: Light to medium bodied, highly carbonated, dry, and very smooth. Lively tart with a dry and a bit powdery finish. Aftertaste is filmy and oily.

D: I, for the most part, haven't been a big fan of the Avery Bal-aged series. That being said, this beer absolutely blows my mind!! A near perfect mouthfeel with great complexity and balance in the flavor. Absolutely delightful and I'm sure to search this one out again!!

Appearance: Pours a reddish copper with a 1 finger white crown that displays some retention and good lace.

Smell: Loads of delicious wild yeast, slight lemon rind brett note, red wine fruitiness, grape skin dry acidity, and a mild wood barrel note. Sweet!

Taste: Wood and a touch of toffee malt up front that is quickly washed over by a wave of yeasty and moderately puckering brett. Just a hint of alcohol presence in the flavor profile. A good interplay of sweet and sour.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium bodied. The carbonation is a bit prickly on the back of the throat and I'd like to see it soften a touch.

Drinkability: Not bad despite being slightly overcarbonated and having a double digit abv.

Got this bottle from BigEBeer, a big want of mine for a while...thanks again man! Poured from a 12oz bottle into my De Dolle large snifter glass. Pours a bronze-like amber color with a HUGE frothy off-white head with amazing retention! Leaves excelent lacing all over the glass walls, sticky, frothy...just a perfect appearance!

Aroma is strong of acidic sharpness! A massive wine-like resemblance for sure...which is not a surprise considering it's aged in all the different barrels. Some light sweet fruit present, yeast...and bourbon rising from deep with-in.

Flavor is sharp, acidic, fruity...full of carbonation, tons of wine characteristics, but yeast/malty to keep the beer approach strong! Wow, this is delicious. Medium body yet big carbonation that lightens the mouthfeel. Finishes dry...and leaves your mouth watering for another sip! Great beer from Avery! Glad I got the chance to try it~

A: The pour is a slightly hazy amber/copper color with a fluffy off-white head that sticks nicely to the sides of the glass.

S: A very pleasant aroma, indeed. Good lactic tartness, cherries, apples, and slightly vinous. A mild oak and funk to the beer, but fairly yeasty and "bretty".

T: The tartness is noticeable right away, but it's not overly sour in any way. The fruit flavors are there, especially the cherries with some lemon character as well. Good barrel/wood flavor and a subtle mustiness to it.

M: The body is medium with a very lively and high level of carbonation. The finish is quite dry.

D: I was surprised to see that this beer was so high in alcohol, as it definitely is not noticeable. Great flavors and aromas, I would happily drink this one again.

A - Pours a clear, deep amber color with a big, frothy, light-beige head. Good retention and leaves some lacing behind.

S - Tart fruit (cherry and apple) aromas jump out first, backed by some of chardonnay. There is a bit of funk hiding in there as well.

T - Sour/tart fruitiness with a strong vinous character. Subtle brett funkiness. Oakiness. Dry finish. Alcohol is slightly noticeable, but is very nicely integrated.

M - Medium body with a soft carbonation that fits this one nicely.

D - Glad I finally cracked this one. Complex flavors that meld together well. I couldn't really detect the bourbon or port barrels' effects, as the oaky, wine flavors really stood in the forefront. Another well done brew from Avery

A: Clear medium-amber with a billowy, creamy inch and a half of off-white foam. Excellent retention and lacing. Beautiful.

S: Fairly subdued aromas of Brett, tart cherries, citrus, and light spice. Nice.

T: Smoothly sour and funky, with pungent citrus, mango, and grape. Very tasty indeed.

M: Creamy throughout, both body and carbonation.

D: Intense and delicious. Not terribly easy to drink, but I never would have guessed it was over 10%. It gets an extra half-point for hiding the booze so thoroughly in wild awesomeness.

Notes: This was the follow up beer to the underwhelming Perseguidor 5, and it blew it out of the water. Awesome beer, and infinitely better than Dépuceleuse. Good show, Avery, and thanks, Tony, for sharing.
