12 oz. Bottle
Gold Foil/Capped
No. 60 In Our Barrel-Aged Series
Bottled: JUNE 14 2021
Production: 50 Bourbon Barrels

A little over 2 years on this bottle.

Poured into a Westy chalice a very nice dark brown/black color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice small/quick/fizzy tan head, which leaves a pretty nice medium-size oil slick, and some nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is very nice, malty, hoppy, very nice chocolate/toffee, very nice bourbon, oaky, coconut, vanilla, licorice, key lime. The taste is very nice malty, hoppy, very nice chocolate/toffee, awesome bourbon note, oaky, coconut, vanilla (sweetness), licorice, key lime. Full body, ABV is hidden pretty well, definitely a sipper/big beer, very complex brew . Overall, very nice/tasty. Aging pretty well. Glad to have given a chance.

Here's an old one leftpaw brought out one holiday season a few years back. Man, I remember when Avery was my favorite Colorado brewery.

Pours black into a FiftyFifty and a Blanche Devereuax glass. Beige/light brown head, small bubles, 1/4" deep. This one wasn't quite fresh, so the coconut was nose invisible to me. The lime didn't smell like lime, what came to mind was some kind of non toxic cleaning agent that might have been lime scented.

Taste, ah, so the lime and ginger is a very cutting bitterness in the mouthfeel and taste. Now pair that with a bunch of boozy what feels like double barrel rum and bourbon heat and you've got an experience that is hard to handle now like the Black Crowes said or something. Ok so I'm not having a good time right now. The attempt at sweetness via a milk stout just makes it even more out of left field. I can't really get down with this.

(review from October 2021) Mmm, Mary Anns' pie is certainly limey enough but not at all sweet or coconutty or bourbony. Definitely smooth but still every bit as POWerful as it's 14.5% just not nearly what I'd hoped for, being a Mary Ann instead of a Ginger guy. Sure hope the 2nd bottle is better because at a buck an ounce, I don't know?? Almost tastes like a rum barrel aged???

Drank this beer years ago in Estes Park, Colorado. It's the best sweet, dark milk stout I've ever tasted. Regret it was a small batch run at Avery. If they made more, I'd buy all of it.

I was returning from Oklahoma and stopped at the largest liquor store in Denver. The establishment had many beer options, but I only purchased a few beverages; this was one of those purchases. I am serving it at 50 degrees in a tulip glass. The pour created a frothy, foamy, half-fingered tan head with average retention. The dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The color is jet black with dark rusty brown ebony hues. It is opaque and charting at SRM 36. It has an average appearance for a stout, especially with a high ABV.
Nosing the glass, I smell dark chocolate, limes, coconut, dark-roasted coffee, char, light Maillard, bourbon, dark-roasted malts, cream, oatmeal, oak, caramel, molasses, vanilla, malty sweetness, and raisins.
Sipping the glass, I taste dark chocolate, bourbon, dark roasted malts, light char, caramel, coconut, limes, oatmeal, cream, dates, leather, espresso, oak, vanilla, light malty sweetness, bready, dark toasted bread crust, raisins, and herbal.
The mouthfeel is chewy and thick, finishing slightly warm. The body is heavy and has low carbonation.
After reading the previous reviews, I was hesitant about sipping this beer. To my delight, I discovered that it was delightful and not overly hot. I am still trying to wrap my head around the chocolate and coffee mixed with coconut and limes; the three ingredients work well together. Thankfully, the limes are not potent and only provide a small supporting role for the overall adjuncts in the beer. I was surprised, I did enjoy this beer.

Black in color with no light penetration. There’s a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering a third of the top. The aroma is coconut, lactose, sweet bourbon, vanilla, cacao, and lime. I’m tasting lactose, coconut, bourbon, cacao, and a bit of lime. The mouth is thick and warm with alcohol.

Look: deep dark imp stout, some ruby highlights. Modest mocha head on the pour that dissipates to wispy swirls.
Smell: creamy lime, roasty vanilla.
Taste: like the nose. Not getting much coconut but all the other flavors are poppin.

Well... if you're going to be stuck on a desert island, let's at least hope to have pie. Avery Brewing's coconut and key lime accented stout boats a pastry stout foundation that makes even a small pour a three hour tour.

Onyx black and topping off with a deep mocha froth, Mary Anne's Pie captures a sultry perfume of coffee, caramel, whisky, coconut, vanilla and a general all-things-savory pie crust character. As advertised, the first sip reveals a deep and malty sweetness backed with impressions of maple, molasses, chocolate, caramel, toffee and butterscotch.

Steering slightly from its sweeter upstart, the middle palate shows the more nuanced pie flavors to thrive with coconut, lime and a general meringue sense of twang. Still roasts with espresso and smoldering embers, its as if the edges of the pie took on a little too much heat. Spicy with booze, a peppery late taste more than balances the lingering sweetness as it shares impressions of whisky and rum.

Full, lavish and decadently dessert-like, the pie inspired stout finishes off-cloying but hot with prickling and numbing alcohol effects that dominate the finish and its long aftertaste. A roast derived astringency hides underneath the lingering sweetness for a spicy closure to an otherwise sweet session.

Black color with very thin tan head. On the nose there is coconut and roasted malts. Lime hovers about. The lime attacks on the taste while coffee and barrel come in. The finish is boozy sweetness with a nice lingering roasted bitterness. The feel is creamy with medium carbonation. This is interesting to say the least. The lime might be a touch too much. It is a good pour nonetheless!

I get a lot of lime scents but in the background the rich coffee stout is lurking along with a touch of bourbon.

That tastes interesting. There's bitterness and rich coffee but it's joined by both lime and coconut. There may be a hint of bourbon too.

It's medium bodied with medium carbonation. The finish is bourbon then lime and finally bitter coffee.

It's a great mix of flavors. It's complex but not muddled. Overall I give it a 5.5 out of 6.

The brewery bills this as an “imperial milk stout aged in bourbon barrels with toasted coconut and key lime.”

Pours nearly black with luscious tan head that has excellent retention and lacing. The aroma is dominated by key lime pie, with some underlying bourbon barrel and toasted coconut. The taste follows the nose. Almost like drinking key lime pie. The lime immediately makes its presence known, but is quickly followed by a creamy coconut and moderate strength bourbon, with all three flavors lingering on the tongue for a long-lasting aftertaste. The base, semi-sweet milk stout is a clever choice, subtlety noticeable under the added flavors but adding some sweetness. The alcohol is exceptionally well masked for a 14.5% abv. Overall this is a really creative offering unlike any I have had before. Perfect for sipping and savoring a 2.5 or 5 oz. pour, but not sessionable at all. I bet this will create a strong division between some who really like it and some who detest it. Personally I liked it much more than I was expecting, and I think it is the best unusual new milk stout I have had this year.
