With a keynote flavor that relies on oaken tartness and high vinous character, it seems that wine descriptors fit better with this ale than do beer ones. I might need Robert Parker's help on this one.

The bubbling ale pours with an appearance like sparkling white zinfindale- its rosy pinkish-mauve body casts against a light and tawny haze. A wisping white head head swirls above with delicate creme texture while it settles into a necklace that adjourns nearing the end of the session with minimal lace.

Its funky, tangy and tart aromas captivate the nose with sharp vinous notes and peppery alcohol. All decorated with the fruit character of dry cider, rose wine, under-ripened berries with lemon and lime. A mild earthy scent accompanies with cork-like must, weathered oak and an attic-like character.

Opening with the tangy sweetness of fruit, the early palate balances its bright acidity with grape must, raspberry, tart cherry, crab apple and lime sweetness. As the taste shrugs off any light sweetness, the middle garners intensifying sourness that hinges on white cider vinegar with the peppery taste of straw and hay. Finishing with the high flavor of wood spice, its alcohols amplify both the tartness, brininess and spicy character that's already built into its taste.

Its light and zesty body is, again like champagne except with a firmer substrate from malt. But even that is sliced right through by the crisp acidity and warming alcohols to finish the beer out. What's left is a stripped palate with echoes of grape and berry.

Pours a deep red with garnet highlights and a frothy khaki head that lingers as a ring of foam.

Aroma is dominated by oak and berries, with grape must taking over in the finish.

Flavor is initially very berry forward, with tart cherries at the forefront, followed by sweetness, finishing slightly dry, oaky, and tannic.

Body and carbonation are moderate, with notes alcohol warmth.

Tastes like a berry-laden cab, with a little added sour funk.

Received as an extra in a trade a long while back. Bottled on Jan 26, 2012. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice crystal clear garnet hue with a thin half finger tannish head that fades quickly to an aggressively bubbling blanket. Looks really carbonated.

S - Aromas of lots of vinous grapes, cherries, nice must, light funky sourness. Quite nice though there is a super faint metallic aroma flashing in and out.

T - Taste is not nearly as good as the nose. Very sweet, almost cloyingly so. Sweet cherries and darker fruits. Almost a port like flavour, light tannic wood notes, very sharp red wine almost brandy like flavours. Actually quite harsh on the end. This would benefit from some sourness.

M - Mouthfeel is a lot less carbonated than I thought it was going to be . Dry finish but actually quite boozy still.

O - Overall I was let down by this beer. It drinks like a very harsh red wine, which while fine is not what a beer should be. Sprinkle in some sourness, some vinegar notes or what have you and this would be fine. Ah, oh well.
