BOTTLE: 2012 vintage. 12 fl oz. Brown glass with gold foil covering the crown cap. Bottled June 14th, 2012. 252 cases produced. #12 in Avery's barrel aged series.

9.39% ABV. Barrel aged "Flanders-esque" sour brown ale.

HEAD: 5-6cm of head. Pale khaki colour. Not the most robust, but not thin either. Retention isn't bad - maybe 3 minutes at best. No lacing is left on the sides of the glass after it's receded fully.

BODY: Translucent semitransparent amber of average vibrance. More appropriate for a Flanders red ale than an oud bruin, but nevertheless appealing. I see no yeast/lees within.

Appears aptly carbonated. It's a nice overall look for an oud bruin, but there's ample room for improvement.

AROMA: Nails the style, more or less. Acetic acid, obvious oak wood (along with vanilla, but I assume that's from the bourbon barrel as well), bacterial complexity (lactobacillus is present, though not dominant per se), and vague fruitiness (maybe dates and grapes). The barrel character is atypical of the style in spite of the presence of oak, with plenty of barrel sugars coming in and countering what should be dominant - the sourness - with too much sweetness. Sourness is a meagre 2/10 in terms of intensity, making this brew hardly seem puckering.

Still, this aroma suggests a balanced and true-to-style brew with some interesting barrel notes - and I think that's exactly what Avery was after with this beer. Still, the wine barrel character isn't horribly evocative, nor are the rum or bourbon barrel notes.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Tart and puckering, indeed - I misjudged the sourness horribly going off the aroma. This is easily a 6-7/10 in terms of sourness, though a lot of it is just lactobacillus, and it lacks the bacterial intricacy of the best truly spontaneously fermented expressions of the style. There's plenty of lactic acid and wild yeasty twang bouncing around in the build, along with the requisite acetic acid and oak.

What never comes through is the high ABV; I'll never know how Avery hides their high ABVs so well (or, to be fair, why they think every barrel aged beer they put out has to be a monster even in delicate styles like oud bruin). There's no booziness or heat here at all.

More umami notes of pie crust manifest - always a treat in any Flanders wild ale. Faint suggestions of grape, raisin, and date do emerge, along with some barrel sugar sweetness.

Speaking of the barrel character: only the wine comes through, which is fine by me (who wants the coconut and sugarcane of bourbon/rum in their oud bruin anyway?). The wine acidity plays well with the acetic notes and grape/raisin notes, fitting in naturally. Would I know this was aged in cabernet sauvignon barrels specifically in a blind tasting? Likely not, but it does seem to be red wine, and I don't find any crisp chardonnay notes like pear. Red wine was a good choice for aging this oud bruin, though I do think its tannic sharpness and acidity makes it an inferior choice to virgin oak.

Brown sugar. A hint of caramel. Subtle leather (possibly from the bourbon barrrel). Brown malts. A kiss of English character in the form of biscuity almost nutty notes.

Certainly balanced, even if the thick red wine does get too prominent on the finish.

Texture is oddly chewy and leathery for an oud bruin. Medium to full-bodied, with a high acidity that holds it back from being refreshing. Slightly coarse and dry (especially in the first act), which is a little odd. Carbonation is slightly high. I do notice some pleasant warmth in the stomach drinking this; maybe that's the ABV finally giving a greeting.

While this lacks an ideal harmony of texture and taste, the mouthfeel is generally well executed at least to the extent that it doesn't get in the way of the flavours. Nice depth of flavour, with high flavour duration and intensity. True, most great expressions of the style are a bit more subtle and delicate in their execution, but Avery opted for a bolder brew when they through this in barrels and upped the ABV.

OVERALL: Avery's barrel series continues its excellence with this oud bruin, though it seems the barrel notes aren't coming through as vividly as Avery's brewers/blenders may have hoped. Unnecessarily high in alcohol, though unlike Avery's stouts, barleywines, monstrous Belgian ales, and pumpkin beers, it isn't noticeable except as a pleasant warmth after consumption. In any case, this is amongst the best American attempts at the style I've sampled, though it does fall short of the best Belgian expressions of the style. Absolutely worth trying and worth the price once (even if traditionalists might prefer a 4 pack of Petrus). I'd like to see this aged entirely in virgin oak with less lactobacillus and more other bacteria strains as well as less acidity for a more delicate and dialed in brew; the result could be world class.

It's aged well aside from beginnings of cardboardy notes indicating it will oxidize going forward. Drink now.

Poured into a JP Sobrehumano snifter

A - Tawny brown, turbid, caramel, rubyish

N - Lemon rind, grape vine, sugar and spice, brown bread, very tart cherries, champagne, macerated oranges, grapefruit, brown sugar, fried apples.

T/M - Competing flavors of super tart cherries and peat, some brandy-ish qualities, port, rolls over the palate, velvety mouthfeel and an alcohol burn in the finish; stone fruits, grilled peaches, it's a hefty sour. Teeth chattering puckering.

D - Complex, wonderful, drink a shitload if you got it.

A: An almost lifeless mahogany with red/purple edges. Head fizzes out quickly. Could be a lot more enticing.

N: Deep oak, acetone, vinegar, and cherry. Vinous wine grape as well as sweet red grapes. Some leather and a touch of tobacco leaf.

T: Puckering sourness and a very, very sharp acidity. Some light sweetness and more of the acetone/vinegar. A bit sulfuric.

M: Alcohol is well hidden. Body is spritzy and biting, and it's a bit dense and oily.

O: Enjoyable, but I'd like a touch more sweetness for balance and a slight reduction in ABV to loosen the strings a bit more.

Bottled June 14, 2012.

This is the most delicious beer I've had in a long time. The Cab Barrels really shine through on the nose. Vinegary, sour w/ a strong cherry character. Tastes just like it smells, delicate at first then the sourness hits you and finishes smooth with the sour cherry coming through at the end. A delicious sour beer. I just wish it wasn't so darn expensive...well worth the treat though. I had it with a bit of chocolate...they went very well together.

Aged for approximately a year.

Appearance-It is a reddish/brown in color with very little head. It has a nice reddish tint throughout, perhaps some to do with the raspberries.

Smell-It has a very subtle scent of the raspberries and wine.

Taste-It is immediately complex. The sourness is the first to hit the palate, followed by the wine notes. This is then rounded out by the raspberries. It is just absolutely fantastic!

Mouthfeel-It is very smooth and the sourness puckers the mouth immediately.

Overall-Amazing! The best sour I have ever had!

From notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Oud Floris pours a dark cranberry brown color with cherry edges and a small tan cap that fades away to a small island floating on top.

The aroma really clues me in that this is going to be a heavily acetic American Wild. The Flanders component is quite obvious, with tart, acidic cherry notes coming through very clearly. The cabernet barrels are definitely prevalent in the nose as well.

Right from the start this is sour and puckering. The sour cherry notes have a very strong acetic vinegar flavor. There is a bit of boozy bourbon that actually fades into the background behind the more powerful sour flavors. Oak and a bit of vanilla come through with a cabernet flavor that does nothing to stop the building sour character. There is a strong lingering sour presence in the finish.

Maybe due to the huge sour nature of the beer, the body has a lightness to it, with a medium crisp carbonation. More noticeably is the huge vinegar burn that I get with each sip and the noticeable acidity that comes with it.

Even though I could not really place the barrels other than the cabernet, I think this is another solid sour offering from Avery. It is definitely more sour than most of the beers I have had from them.

Reviewing Oud Floris from Avery Brewing Company out of Boulder, Colorado.

Bottled June 14, 2012. Served in a Bourbon County Brand Stout snifter and enjoyed on 06/13/13.

Appearance: Pours a murky chestnut brown color with some fade to dull yellow atop when held up to the light with a thin layer of tan bubble head that quickly settles to a bubbly ring around the glass. Poor lacing and retention. 3/5

Smell: Smells sour and acidic, but not funky. Balsamic vinegar, tart lactic acid, wet wood, rum and notes of sour cherry. When it warms, I get hints of "plastic." 4.25/5

Taste: Super tart, and growingly so as this beer warms up. The tartness hits you sharply on the inside of the cheeks. Lots of lactic acid, rum, sour cherry, balsamic and vinegar. A hint of medicinal funk, but it's very mellow and well incorporated. Wet wood and hints of vanilla too. Finishes with tart cherry, lacto and a little sour dark fruit. Tastes a lot like it smells with a little more funk, a dash of dark fruit and the flavors seemingly hitting you in a different order. The sour dark fruit and lacto flavors linger well past the swallow. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-minus bodied, low carbonation. Super tart and quite dry. Spot on mouthfeel for what I want on this beer. 4.75/5

Overall: A delicious sour brown with great complexity from the marry of barrel blending. This is one of my favorite Avery sours.

Cost: $12 for a 12 oz bottle.

Pours a murky reddish-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour, and tart with grain, wood, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet and sour grain and fruit vinaigrette flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is quite tasty and easy to drink.

Dark slightly reddish brown, almost totally opaque. Unusually dark. Builds a 1/2" khaki head that quickly dissipates to a thin layer. Acceptable for the style.

Smells very rich with deep balsamic vinegar, currants, pomegranate, vinousness (vinosity?) and oak. There's a little bit of dark molasses, presumably from the rum and/or bourbon barrels. Sweet dark fruit, like dates. Lots going on here.

Big sweet and sour taste leads with tart cherry and red wine vinegar, some oak. Finishes with cranberry and tamarind, slightly tannic. Some leather comes out as it warms. Very bright and fruity, well balanced between sweet and sour. Covers the alcohol well.

Nice texture. Comes on full bodied and lush, ends drier. A little sticky as it ends though.

Big and unique. I like the contrast between the taste and aroma, the balance, the complexity. Very good.

Poured dark brown in color with dark reddish highlights and a thin bubbly head that left very little lacing sticking to the glass. Plenty of vinous barrel character upfront in the nose with signs of vinegar, subtle cherry fruit, some brown sugar, slight oakiness and some underlying citrus notes. The vinegar was more prominent on the palate with a little booze kick coming through I'm assuming is from the rum barrels but had nice vinous barrel accents which added nice tart qualities alongside cherry fruit character, subtle oakiness and a touch of citrus twang. The brew was light to medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, fruity, slight oaky, vinegary, vinous and tart finish. Definitely delicous and worth to try.

Bottled June 14, 2012. Pours a dark brown with a nice reddish hue to it. Small, off-white head. Scent is funky is shit!!! Very sour aroma with some nice tannic notes. Musty funk with sour cherries. Light chocolatey scents with some great barrel aromas. Granted, I wouldn't be able to tell this beer was aged in rum barrels if I hadn't read the label. However, now that I know it is partially aged in rum barrels...I can make it out. The bourbon barrels are east to detect with the slight vanilla sweetness. Taste is just as it smells...maybe with a little more vinegar than expected. All the barrels come through so lovely. This beer is VERY complex! I know it's hard to believe, but you can actually taste the sweet spirits, as well as the red and white wines. So tasty, with some booziness that works very well with this beer. Mouthfeel is almost puckering with some sweet, stickiness to it. Drinkability is high. Although this beer is meant to be sipped and savored...it is VERY drinkable. Overall, this is very impressive. I am very pleased with this beer.

A: Medium burgundy. ¼ (khaki) fingernail head on gentle pour.

S: Brown sugar, cinnamon, tannins, and dark fruit. Hint of vinegar here too with touch of sour cherry. Soft vinous overtones as well. Good barrel character here too.

T: Taste follows smell quite closely, but characteristics are quite muffled together and the only thing that comes forward is the sour. Tannins, barrel, and loads over sour overtones. Honestly, I wish the fruit sweetness would come out a bit more to balance this beer out.

M: Medium body with mild carbonation.

O: This beer was simply okay in my book. Not too much that makes it stand out, but there seems to be a bit of long-term potential if the flavours and characters can mesh together over time. We will see…

A - Very dark brown-red body, topped by a thick collar, wisps on top, and some splotchy lace.

S - Definitely maltier than Odio Equum; this is more in the Flanders vein of things. A bit of chocolate and fruit sweetness, with lactic sourness, cherry vinegar, and plenty of wet oak. Now that I see that there was a rum barrel component I'm not terribly surprised.

T - Less oak-heavy, with light chocolate and brown malts, and more overt lactic sourness. There's some fruity raspberry and cherry notes that are verging towards vinegar but aren't overly acetic. Alcohol is pretty well-hidden here.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, well-hidden alcohol, and a moderate-to-high acidity level.

D - Good stuff, although not quite as enjoyable as Odio Equum. Still, I'd happily drink another bottle of this or order a glass if it showed up somewhere on-tap. After some early missteps these Avery sours are getting quite consistent.

Pours a semi viscous, hazy reddish-amber color with a small quickly dissipating white head that leaves some spotty lacing; very wine-like here

Aromas begins with an abundance of fruit, highlighted by cherries, pomegranate and raspberry. As it warms it gets more complex with emerging oak tannins, vanilla and vinegar. There is a distinct sweet booziness that could either be the wine, rum or bourbon barrel, but it's hard to tell for sure.

The flavors are just as big and bold as the aromas. There is some intial brown sugary malt sweetness but then you get a ton of sour vinous qualities including sweet red fruity berries, red and white wine grapes complemented by a gentle funkiness. The drying vinious oak tannic flavors appear more in the finish as well as the rum and/or bourbon barrel vanilla imparted flavors.

The mouthfeel was medium to heavy bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is quite sour and drying with an emerging barrel booziness which is not unpleasant and no more biting than a red wine.

Overall I enjoyed this one a great deal, maybe my favorite so far of the series that I have been fortunate enough to sample. I think this one is still a bit green and could use some time for the complex and intense flavors to mesh and become a more drinkable beer because right now it's a bit of a sipper and rough around the edges.

Allowed to warm up quite a bit, this one pours dark brown amber, dark tan head, departing quickly and leaving a fine film and strands of lace and a thin collar.

The nose is of red wine, vinagar, chocolate, raspberries, then earthy and musty to top things off, all sorts of stuff going on.

Quite tart, with more sharp vinagar, musty, ripe biting fruit, complex and overflowing with flavor and character. This is badass sour, that will not to everybodies liking. However the sour lovers amoung us will be pleased.

Likely could use some more time in the bottle...oh well...

It's a must to let this warm up, the first colder sip was kinda shocking, then the later sips, more enjoyable.

The beer pours a reddish-amber color with a white head. The aroma is full of toffee and sour cherries, with some nice red wine notes thrown in for good measure. The flavor is extremely sour with a lot of sour cherries and sour red wine character. I also get some oak and a hint of rum. There is also a light amount of sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. A very nice sour.

APPEARANCE: Pours a deep, dark brown with some lighter brown getting through near the top when held to the light. A small head rises and then quickly falls leaving a ring of off-white foam around the edges. Not much lacing here.

SMELL: Very funky. There is a lot going on here, but all of it in a subtle way. Vanilla, oak, hints of grapes, tart cherry and maybe even a touch of nuttiness. The aroma is pleasant and light, but warns of an intensely sour beer.

TASTE: Yikes. This thing is even more intense than the nose indicated it would be. The only thing coming through is tart cherry. It completely dominates. As the beer warms a few other flavors come out of hiding. Vinegar and a decent dose of wood shine through. The caramel and spice I expected never really comes through and sadly, neither does the bourbon or rum.

MOUTHFEEL: Slight carbonation with a TON of pucker. This is not an easy beer to drink.

OVERALL: I love big, bold beers, but this is simply too extreme. It goes over the top with the tartness and is nearly undrinkable, something I never, ever say about an Avery beer. But hey, when you're experimenting with beer, you win some and you lose some and 95% of the time Avery wins.

Pours murky reddish brown with a minimal head and a few spots of lacing. Looks more like a red wine than a beer.

Lots going on in the aroma. Lots of tannins and oak, but I get a distinct buttery chardonnay smell as well. Some caramel notes and also faint traces of a sweet spirit most likely the rum.

Again very complex, but with different elements than the nose. Rich caramel and chocolate stand out. Tannins are just as strong as the nose, but I get way more of the cab presence in the flavor. Heavy oak and tannins make this one a bit harsh (in a good way for me, but dry red wine haters may want to stay away). Rum and bourbon kick it up just a notch and are really background players adding some complexity rather than standing out on their own.

Medium bodied with carbonation levels on the lower side which helped support a lot of the vinous flavors.

Really came together as it warmed and the deper into the bottle the more I enjoyed it. Very complex flavors with different things hitting through the process of warming. May be my favorite Avery sour I've tried yet.

Pours a dark brown color with a thin white head that dissipates quickly

A very unique nose, some definite acidity but it is balanced by a malty sweetness. A definite rum-like character, pineapple, strawberries.

Slightly tannic but that works with the sweetness, balanced with the tartness, just a touch of acidic burn on the back of your throat lets you know it is working :)

Full mouthfeel, some sours can seem thin due to highly attenuative yeast but this is not the case here.

Overall Avery has made a really unique sour. Definitely not traditional nor for everybody, but if you want one with a fair bit of sweetness and heft, you will not be dissapointed, just wish I had more.

A- Pours a very dark brown with minimal head

S: Slight sour scent with hints of wine barrels

T: Moderately to very tart at the beginning, you can taste the barrels more and more it seems as it warms. Fairly good amount of alcohol but balanced nicely with tartness and body. The finish was a little bitter, which may have changed had it aged more.

M: Nicely carbonated for a sour, overall it was very nice.

O: Great beer, I liked it a lot. Wish I had another to cellar for a year or two and try again.

S: Can really smell the red wine and some sour fruit. Can detect a slight hint of booze scent too.

T: Lots of wine at the beginning very delicious. Can taste a little bit of wood and has a very tart finish. The warmer it got the more apparent the fruit taste was.

M: Quite a bit of carbonation, great feel overall.

O:A very delicious beer. Had a great blend of barrels that combine for a very unique flavor.

this is about as close to perfect as a beer can get. its so so so good. pours a rich coppery cherry color with a one inch off white head. it smells amazxingly complex. sweet from the rum aging right away, tart as anything from the brett in here, and a rich smokey whiskey smell at the end, with everything from dark dried fruit to vanilla to acidic white wine vibes, the nose has it all. the flavor is straight up sour, its piquant and puckey and delicious. lots of fruit and acid from the wine barrells, warming alcohol, oak, this beer really has it all, in one of the most complex packages ive ever experienced. i cant even quite place everything im tasting. this is the best beer avery has made that ive tried, its beyond exceptional. the feel is dry as hell from all the sour, but there is a sugary feel too, and lots and lots of booze. the combinations of different barrels this was aged in have made it entirely unique, and the sour in this beer is as intense as any russian river beer out there. i might have a new favorite beer in this one, its got all of those things and yet still some chocolatey malt because after all there is still a brown ale buried under here somewhere. this is epic and totally worth the price tag!

The color is nice in the Leffe globe-- a coppery brown with golden highlights. A slight spritz at first pour but little head. Near flat after a few minutes in the glass. Interesting winey and vinegary aroma.

This brew is on the acidic side of this style. Some body to it from the residual malt, but sweetness is pretty well submerged in the acidity. A hint of apples and dry, bitter cider. To say it tastes like cherries would be stretching the imagination, but there is a little sour fruit. Woody. The four different barrels is a little over the top, and the confusion of flavors fighting through the sourness are not very enlightening. The alcohol seems to intensify the sharp flavors. Quite a bitter finish, though not from hops, apparently.

This 12 oz bottle says it was bottled June 14 2012. An interesting effort, and I will keep tasting these things to learn more about the spectrum. Bought at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

From a bottle into a tulip. Bottled Jun 14, 2012 according to the label.

A-Not anything special...poured a very dark brown with rust tinting. Thin tan head quickly fades into a thin cap. Streams of visible carbonation.

S-loods of wood, with dark fruit, and red wine (from the Cab Sauv bottles). It was tart, as well, with a hint of malt and vanilla.

T-Cabernet was very apparent. Thus, I got hints of almond and vanilla to go with the dark fruit. Some vinegar. It was pretty sour, but not mouth-puckering. I really noticed the wine barrels (especially the Cab Sauv), as well as the bourbon, but I didn't get much rum/caramel. There is long, long, sour cherry finish, but this isn't a cherry-dominant sour.

M-lighter body with prickly carbonation. I agree with some other reviewers that said this beer could have used a little more body.

O-I liked this beer quite a bit and am looking forward to cellaring some. It was complex with a great smell and, while not perfect, I could easily drink more.

@Bruery Provisions for Experimental Sour Flight

App- I use this term a lot but this fits here. The color of a cordial mixed with some red wine. A little brown, a little gold, a little read. No real head, small trail of bubbles.

Smell- It smelled better than it looked. It was a lot to take in. Nice setting outside let it warm a little more to release some of the oak and tannins. This was all over the place for me though. Oaky, tannin, sweet, boozy, malty, chocolate and caramel.

Taste- Really had a lot working for it. The blend of the four different barrels was a really nice addition. The wine barrels balancing off the rum was very flavorul. Added a good depth of flavor but wasnt too sour either from the final blend. Smooth, silky, rich and chewy. Had a bit of a chocoalte flavor to it as well.

Mouth- A bit light and sweet IMO. More of a light medium where it needed some fullness to balance. A little bit of a thin carbonation as well. Residual sweetness with a good cordial feel.

Drink- Its a nice beer. The style get jumbled a little bit but all together nice. I wouldnt mind a whole bottle to sip on.
