12 oz can with an October 2018 canning date stamped on the bottom; from the Wall of Beer (Clemson, SC; $2.29).
Pours clear but very dark reddish brown, near opaque in the glass with ruby highlights. A modest size beige head with decent retention but little lacing.
Moderately strong aroma for style with dark toast, dark dried fruits, dark roasted grains, alcohol and black coffee.
Flavor: follows but with less obvious alcohol, more chocolate, and just a touch of smoke. Moderately bold flavor for style.
Feel: near full body with low carbonation.

Dark brown with red highlights. Small tan head that disappears quickly.
Coffee aroma, a little chocolate.
Coffee dominates the taste, all the way. There is a hint of chocolate.
A little on the thin side.

From 32 ounce Howler.

Not pitch black cuz I see a lot of red, healthy off white head of foam, excellent lacing.

Big coffee and roasted malt nose, some chocolate, overall roasted and bitter.

Roasted malt is more apparent than the coffee to me in the taste. Dark chocolate bitterness, here but I definitely get some sweet notes and vanilla.

Medium body, carbonation is not overbearing.

Delicious and easy drinking. I dig it.

12 oz can, canned on 10/5/18. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy brown head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet roast chocolate malt and coffee.

The flavor is acidic burnt roast coffee with a little lactose. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, I remember liking this a lot more on tap.

As the trend of stout is to go all imperial, pastry, sweet, boozy and lush, the brewers at Avery Brewing Company have never considered retiring their trie and true Out of Bounds American stout, but rather giving it a java fueled makeover an extension of flavor without giving up drinkability.

Pouring a somber black appearance, the coffee looking beer lifts a frothy mocha blanket onto the nose. Coffee reaches deep into the olfactory senses along with a host of roasted grain character, burnt toast, cocoa and burnt caramels and creams. Sweet upfront, the beer graces the tongue with those burnt sugars of buckwheat, toffee and scorched milk.

As with most Americanized ale, the middle palate shows a fast withdraw of sweetness that leaves a host of residual malt flavors to linger on the tongue. Burnt toast, coffee, walnut and charred woods mingle to reinforce an overall roasty, toasty and nutty taste on the late palate. Broadly bitter, the sharpness of pine plays well with the dark roast coffee roundness.

Full bodied but on the edge of medium because of the beer's strong attenuation that dries the beer wonderfully, as well as the piquant resin nature of hops. Together, the beer hosts a quick turn to finish with a dry, roasty and somewhat scorched earth linger deep into an arid and effortless aftertaste.

"Stout with coffee added"

Made with Ozo Coffee, which I consumed a few days prior in Boulder. Lots of emphasis on brewing technique, but the roasting left a lot to be desired. Anyways...

Really great coffee stout - very, very coffee forward. Huge aromas of light roast, chocolate, dry malt. Flavor follows suit with a really nice iced-coffee bite and a dry lingering finish. Yum.

12oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of roasted coffee, chocolate and toffee. Nice roast coffee taste with some nice chocolate notes.

Canned on 10/5/18. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a fluffy light khaki head that falls leaving great bubbly retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have hints of chocolate, coffee, vanilla and hazelnut. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose for the most part. Everything is balanced. More chocolate and coffee notes. There's a touch of sweetness. It's not that bitter. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's sharp, spritzy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is an alright coffee stout. Once again, everything is balanced and nothing stands out or takes over. Don't get me wrong though, it's not bad.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 10/5/2018. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with amazing retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big nutty dark roasted coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and toasted dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, wood, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty dark roasted coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and toasted dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, wood, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy hop; and roast, charred, coffee bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark/brown bread, vanilla, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, wood, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.5%. Overall this is an excellent American coffee stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Not overly bitter/charred. Awesome balance of rich malts and fruity/nutty coffee complexity; with nice earthy hop presence/balance against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and awesome spot on American style example.
