I picked up a can of Beards Brewery's Malabar Black IPA last week at Boyne Country Provisions. This one caught my eye and I don't think I've had a Black IPA that's brewed with coffee before, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a 12oz can into a imperial pint glass.
A- The can looks nice, it's got a nice design and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a very dark brown color that took on more of a brown color when held to the light with 2 and a half fingers worth of creamy slightly darker tan head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice rings of patchy lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.
S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a mixture of citrus rind, floral, soapy and generic hop aromas with no single aspects sticking out the most and there's some doughy yeast showing up in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart a mix of dark malts, roasted, slightly charred, light chocolate and grainy aromas with no single aspect sticking out the most and right at the end there's just a little bit of coffee. This aroma is nice, but I wish the coffee stood out more and I could go without the soapy hops.
T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of medium sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart the same mix with no single hoppy aspects sticking out the most and there's just a little bit of doughy yeast in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart all the same malty aspects that they did in the aroma and they show up just a little more. On the finish there's just a little bit of a coffee flavor that isn't too noticeable and it had a slightly higher amount of medium bitterness with a hoppy, roasted malt and light coffee like aftertaste. This is a decent tasting beer, but I wish the hop profile was brighter and it would be nice if the coffee showed up more.
M- Fairly smooth, crisp, pretty dry on the finish, on the slightly lighter side of being medium bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it worked well with this beer.
Overall I thought this was a decent beer and I thought it was pretty close to be an average example of the style, the black IPA base wasn't that far away from being average and the coffee only helped it a little, but since it was light it could only help so much. This beer had ok drinkability, I think one would be my limit, it might start to wear on me after that. What I like the most about this beer is the appearance and mouthfeel, they were both pretty nice and the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is the taste and the drinkability, they need some work. I don't think I would buy this beer again, but I don't think I would turn one down. It's not a must try, but if you want to see how a little bit of coffee works with a black IPA this might be worth checking out. All in all this beer was decent, but it has potential and I think with a little more work this could be a good beer. It made for an ok first impression for this brewery and I'm interested in trying more of their beers. Better luck next time guy, this one could use a little more work.
