22oz bottle that my brother brought back from the brewery. Bottled 02/2017. Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.
Pours a dirty rust brown with about a finger and a half of ecrue head. The light froth quickly settles to a large central island and broad collar but fails to impart any lace.
Smells of toffee, caramel, mild barrel funk and wet oak.
A brief whisper of the barrel funk noted in the aroma is apparent up front in the flavor but is quickly usurped by toffee, cooked sugar, earthy leather, wet wood and stone fruit skins
Medium body with moderate carbonation. Finishes with notes of wet barrel, diluted toffee and some earthy grain.
This is a decent stab at barrel aging an English barleywine. Barrel Aged Bertha is quite serviceable but fails to show a strong standing in a crowded field of contenders. Cool to see Southbound stretching in a new direction and I'm happy to have tried it.
