Serving: On tap, sampler flight
Served: 5 April 2014
Appearance: Cloudy light yellow with a frothy white head.
Smell: Banana sweetness, some spice, but nothing too assertive.
Taste: If you told me this was a witbier, I would have believed you, but a Belgian pale ale? Not so sure. Very little detectable bitterness from the hops, or any hop characteristic at all. Much more assertive banana flavors with some slight fruity esters in there as well. I would have liked to see more bitterness in this beer. I know hops aren't supposed to dominate in a traditional belgian pale, but this one, at only 19 IBU, barely had any. Call it a wit, and the taste profile is spot-on.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and full-bodied from the suspended yeast. Good carbonation makes this one go down easy.
Overall: I can't help but knock this one for the taste. This would be a great witbier, but the fact that 1) it's unfiltered, 2) hop bitterness is almost entirely absent, 3) hop flavor is absent makes it hard for me to throw my full support behind this as a belgian pale ale. Check the BJCP guidelines and you'll find this one lacking in many key areas of the belgian pale ale, not the least of which is falling entirely outside the "standard" IBU range of 20-30 IBU.
