Hazy beers are all the rage at the moment, at least here in Australia. Every man, dog and their brewery are coming out with a Hazy Pale, or Hazy IPA. It’s the new XPA, which is still highly popular but the Hazy Hysteria is currently the trend. I’ve enjoyed many a good Hazy beer, up this is the latest release from Sydney’s favourite Newtown brewery Young Henry’s. Let’s find out if this will serve the people - as their slogan goes - or find itself in a cloudy disappointment.

Appearance: Poured from a 375ml can with a salmon pink and silvery livery into my Arundel brewery pint glass, it can definitely be classed as hazy. Murky orange with a thin bubbly white head, it at the very least looks how it’s described. (3.75/5)

Smell: Bright and hoppy. A good tang of passion fruit, mango, a hint of apricot, touch or orange zest, bread crust and biscuity malt character. Smells typically pale ale-y, with nothing overly spectacular that I haven’t smelt before in an Aussie \ American styled Pale Ale. It smells refreshing, thirst quenching, and fresh. (3.25/5).

Taste: A lot more bitter than I was anticipating. There is a malt sweetness, but it’s certainly got more hop bitterness than your run of the mill Aussie Pale Ale, Hazy or otherwise. There’s a unripe mango and stone fruit note throughout the sip, which adds to the bitterness. It’s not overly sweet, there’s definitely malt in there, but unlike most Aussie Pales, it’s not malt driven. It’s there balancing the bitterness somewhat, not allowing it to get out of control. Quite a dry finish. Very refreshing, definitely a sunny summer sipper. Could knock back a few easily in a beer garden, or just chilling by the pool. (3.75)

Feel: Despite coming in at 5.2%, it’s light and somewhat thin, adding to the drinkability and sessionability of the beer. Decently carbonated but not overly so. (3.25/5)

Overall: A nice, easy drinking summer thirst quencher, that’s not too sweet and has a refreshing tartness to it. Would be worth picking up a pack of these for a lazy Sunday session. Another good beer by the lads at Young Henry’s. (3.5/5)
