Grateful Hands Red Fern pours a nice mahogany color with a frothy 1 finger khaki head, splotchy lacing all up in the tulip glass.
Rich aroma of orange rind and pine needles, slightly herbal, good hop forward aroma.
Taste follows the nose: orange zest washes down with the sweet malt and leaves a savory piney flavor on the palate, alcohol is undetectable, very clean tasting.
Mouthfeel is medium, perfect carbonation for the style, nice dry finish.
I've been enjoying a few other hoppy red ales made in Vermont (Lawson's Steve's Back Yard Red, Fiddlehead's Ruby Claire) and Maine (MBC Red Wheelbarrow,Zoe) that all share similarities in appearance, aroma, and taste.
Grateful Hands Red Fern most certainly deserves it's place in the pack. I'm impressed with the small batch hand crafted quality that I have sampled from this brewery so far, but their availability is quite limited. At $6.99 for a 22 oz. bomber, Red Fern represents a good value for the quality, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to the humane society. Another quality Vermont brewer worthy of closer inspection, and the master brewer even called me back to answer my questions when I left them a message, which is a nice touch.

22 oz bottle. Label reads "Hoppy American Red Ale", but the ABV is a mystery. No date.
appears a clear dark copper with red highlights. off white foamy head. good head retention. smell is a mix of citrus and piney aroma. nice and hoppy. nice slightly sweet malt body in the taste, highlighted by bright hop flavors on top. tasty. medium body and carbonation, appropriate for the beer.
overall - just like the label says - a nice hoppy red ale.
