This is a hoppy black Pilsner, or traditionally a Schwarzbier, in which we increased the hops a bit. This beer has an elegant maltiness w/ mild, almost bittersweet, notes of chocolate and coffee. Magnum hops impart a clean hop bitterness, while Black Water’s dry finish allows the Chinook and Tettnang hop spiciness to shine through.

Poured into a pilsener glass, the appearance was mostly dark brown color, some transparency could be seen when held up to the light. Finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that dissipated pretty quick. Speckled sticky lace. The aroma had the German bready yeast up front with some baker’s chocolate, toast and cereal grains. Mild roasty nuts and toast in the background. Crisp grassy hoppy notes. Some earthiness. The flavor leads with the breadiness, neither straying to the sweet side or the bitter side. Crisp hoppy notes bite in gently, somewhat like an Americanized pilsener. Those hoppy notes and bready/yeastiness slide into the aftertaste and present a quick semi-sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionable sort of feel strolling about. Nice carbonation felt good. Overall, one of the oddest German pilseners I've ever had and I really don't think it's one, perhaps closer to a Euro Dark Lager.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on April 8, 2017.
The pour is not black but it is a deep brown color wit a lingering, foamy mocha head.
The short description of the aroma is sweet malts - but it is more than that. I get some roastiness, raisins maybe, charcoal, dark bread and a low earthy hop profile.
Medium fairly smooth body.
The dark roasted malt character jumps out in the taste with a definite malty sweetness but essentially no hop finale. It is smooth, sweet, and clean.

Had at the brewery last night into their shaped pint glass. Black Water Pils comes out how you think it would: darker brown near black with a foamy tan head that leaves some spotty lacing.
Smell is roasted malt upfront, hint of chocolate sweetness, bit of earthy hops. Flavor is mostly that of a schwarzbier, dark bread malts up front, some lighter chocolate and roasty notes, bit of lager yeast. Finishes clean and bitter, some earthy and leafy hops in the end.
Feel is pretty light, body is a bit thin, overall it might be a bit too bitter for this application. Was a pretty nice beer, though not sure I get why they're releasing it so late in the season, I wouldn't consider this warm weather beer.

12 oz beer was poured into a pilsner glass.
Appearance: A one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a black color with no vision of anything. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.
Smell: Roasted, bready, bittersweet chocolate, caramel, smoke, earthy, and lager yeast.
Taste: Roasty, smokey midnight wheat, bittersweet chocolate, bready, lager yeast, light bitterness, a little chewy, and caramel.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied, ashy bitterness, a little chewy, lager yeast, crisp, smooth, and medium carbonation.
Overall: Pretty tasty schwarzbier. I'll revisit this one again.

from a bottle to a beer tulip
look; black, opaque, maybe a mahogany hue. 1/4" caramel tan head disappears quickly leaving a thin covering, not much lacing
smell; chocolate biscotti with espresso, i like it but nothing like a pilsner
taste; chicory, coffee, well roasted malt, hard to identify hops but hint of pine, even less hint of honey. finishes with a hops/coffee/grapefruit bitterness.
feel; mild to moderate carbonation, medium body, somehow crisp, with a finish on the dry side
overall; i really like the taste, would have this again when in the mood for a lighter porter, or a darker session, or maybe nostalgic for dogfish chicory stout, it kind of reminds me of that. I can believe this is a lager after reading their own description, but would not have guessed in tasting, enjoyable to drink

Dark brown color where bright sunlight can pass through the center of the glass. Nearly no head and no lace whatsoever.
Could this be a lagered Porter? The smell is far more chocolate than a pale lager.
Served extra cold at the Brewers Coalition in Newton...notably colder. Again, I get far more darker roasted malt than noble hops. There's a hop presence but it is overtaken by the dark toast flavors. The body is neutral with a corresponding carbonation level.
