$14 NZD per 473ml draught pour (don't ask me why it's 473ml...I'm bloody done trying to figure out New Zealand's pour volume rationale at this point) at Hashigo Zake, Wellington, New Zealand.
APPEARANCE: Certainly not clear. Lacks transparency but it's not cloudy like I'd expect. Looks a bit too "clean" for a Kellerbier proper.
AROMA: Lemony twang, vitaminy yeast, pale malt, a bit of borderline funkiness.
TASTE: Matches expectations generated by the aroma. Lemony twang, cellar dust funk, biscuity vitaminy yeast, pale malt, scintillae of cedar. Balanced and true to style albeit absent of flourish.
TEXTURE: Smooth, a biteen overcarbonated, wet, somewhat refreshing, on the light side of medium-bodied.
OVERALL: A true to style kellerbier that's well worth trying for enthusiasts, but it runs a bit pricey for the hoi polloi. Has no off-flavour, isn't overhopped or unconventional...this a sincere attempt at tradition, and it works.
