Light auburn color, white head, 1/2" in depth. Oily resin hop aromas. Pine.. C hops, bittering simcoes.

Taste was solid, drops a big wave of bitterness, grapefruit and pine all over the place. No frills, big beer. Caramel malt flavors make it sticky.

On tap at the brewery today. Was downtown and decided to check the place out

Poured a dark gold with a finger and a half of foam. Good retention and thick lacing with mild carbonation. A little dark but still a respectable looking beer. Aroma of moderate hops, grapefruit, other citrus esters along with some pine and a touch of alcohol and some sweet malts in the back. It wasn't as strong as I'd hoped but still has that solid ipa smell. Taste was strong hops, but not too much of the citrus that's detected in the nose. Some pine resins meld well with the malts to bring everything together. Has a nice medium bodied feel with a crisp dry finish, very bitter and drinkable. Overall this beer wasn't bad, but could use some more balance to make it more complex. Next time I'm in the area I'll try and stop by for a pint, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for

So finally, the last beer in the flight. I kind of got the speculative thought that this was a begrudging choice at the brewery. They specialize in all these belgian themed beers, and then, there it is, something completely new, west coast, trendy double ipa. Regardless, I think its always a wise business move to have a go to hoppy ipa when opening a brewery in 2012 on the west coast side of the world.

Pours an amber and orange appearance, as usual, good clarity coming from it, high dry hopping robs the beer of some head and retention, but par for the course, and still an above average appearance. Aroma, cool, they dry hopped, and didn't skimp. I'd guess some C hops and probably simcoe on this one.

Taste, bam, that's how you do it. I kind of scoffed at the 300 ibu claim, but we don't need to rehash the theoretical ibu debate here. What really matters is that this is a damn good hoppy double ipa. Not heavy sticky caramel, its only big enough to keep the rest of the beer in check and allow the hoppiness to still dominate without getting catty and out of wack. What they describe as a nutty, caramel finish is truly complimentary, and lets the hopping shine.

My favorite beer they make, but hey, its one of my favorite styles. The real challenge will be when they break out (rumored) some lambics.

Ultimately though, for a brewery that is all about the belgians, they make a better dipa than most alleged hop forward breweries do.

A definite must try for hopheads.
