From notes, On-tap at the brewery on 10-18-13

A - Dark brown with one finger of tan head, medium lacing
S - Lots of weird yeasty funk, a lot of wood tones, earthy traits, roasted malts.
T - Very sweet malt in front then a bit of tartness, fades to a smooth vanilla touch
M - Creamy smooth and rich, very full feeling
O - Decent WHSA, nice complexity in flavor, but the aroma is wack.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another growler a little over a week old, but these purged, swing tops filled to the brim held up nicely, good job Blue Lobster.

Decent creamy but fizzy 1+ finger head fades semi slowly with nice lacing, great looking for such high abv, semi clear mostly hazy mahogany maroon reddish brown color.

Nose is more complex than typical scotch ale, plenty of brown malts but also a bit of a toasty big Brown ale aroma, light biscuit and molasses, brown sugar, bit of a candy but mostly dry like, touch of butterscotch, toffee, and hints of dried fruit.also light herbal hops and some light phenolic booze.

Taste starts fairly sweet with more candy flavours, toasty brown malts, biscuit and a creamy brown malt as well. Then molasses, brown sugar, hint toffee, little nutty. Then hops, light herbal earthy hops with fair bitterness, into the phenolic booze again, an almost fusel booze taste but doesn't seem so boozy somehow. hops add a nice grassy floral character later, as it finishes semi dry but sticky, little syrupy, bit more of the phenolic booze, plenty of toasty brown malts and sweet flavours, and touch more earthy hop.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, decent carb, light warming booze.

Overall nice for a wee heavy, not usually my fav style as they are typically pretty much a single-trick pony style beer and there isn't much you can do with it. However this was a nicely done one, with good malts, nice hops in the background, somewhat like a wee-heavy and big brown ale blended nicely. Drinkable with the high abv too.

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a ruby coloring, with a dark and sparkly body, and a thin, filmy, white head and awesome cling all over the glass. Nose of caramel, smoke, and floral highlights, with hints of earth. Very rich, but not overpowering. Flavors of rich caramel, sugar, scotch character, roast, and subtle bitterness at the end. Sweet, but not cloying. Never would have guessed the ABV on this one! Very well disguised/layered. Smooth, light body. Roast and richly sweet aftertaste, with a tangy linger. The finish is slow, smooth, with a sweet linger. I could drink this all day!

 

 

 

 

 

Alewife and I bought a growler of this a few weeks ago, and what better time to enjoy it than a gorgeous Sunday out in the 'Zebo while listening to some vintage Chicago Transit Authority....

Filled my nonic with a clear, deep mahogany brew. A bit too dark to see any carbo, but the head was thin and light beige, with decent lacing left arrears. The aroma was a bit mild, but did exhibit some good caramel malt. The body is a solid medium, and it is fairly smooth going down.

The flavor has some solid sweetness in the form of lots of caramel malts. It is not at all cloying though, as some tasty florality jumps in to balance things out. Also in the mix is a bit of nuttyness, like almonds, in a way. There seems to be a suggestion of peatyness as well, though I am unsure if it's real or just hoped for! Regardless, though not a killer version, this is well made and satisfying. Prosit!!
