Quite a nice caramel taste, plenty sweet but balanced by a long bitter aftertaste. Actually it's a rather leafy and herbal hop flavor. Bourbon taste jumps out at first sip, along with the sweet maltiness, but it subsides into the hop aromatics. Some dark prune flavor and burnt sugar.
It's a little harsh in the aftertaste, and increasingly bitter, after the smooth start. An interesting but not particularly drinkable strong beer. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium to dark red amber with a thin white head that dissipates to a ring around the glass with no lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, oaky vanilla, bourbon. Flavor is caramel malt, plums, dates, oak, vanilla, bourbon with grassy hops developing into a moderately alpha hopped finish with light grassy herbal flavors. Medium bodied with light carbonation and creaminess. A full bodied, spot-on barleywine with great dark fruit malt, clear, but not obtrusive bourbon barrel character and a nice dose of hops to finish off. Really a well made take on the classic American version of a barleywine. Alcohol warming, but well covered. Enjoyable.
