Look: As the name implies, jet black, even when held up to light. Beige head recedes to ½ finger – pillowy
Aroma: Coffee, roasted barley, a little melanoidin – smell is making my mouth water which is a good sign
Taste: Coffee immediately, then quickly the dark malted grains kick in. Some earthy and spicy hops mingle in and then back to smooth cold-brewed coffee to finish. Super crisp and clean on the palate with no harshness or bite
Mouthfeel: In case the coffee flavors/aromas caught you off guard or you hadn’t seen the label, this aspect leaves no doubt it’s a lager – lighter body but not too light, solid quenching mouthfeel
Overall: I’ve never had nor heard of a Schwarzbier with cold-brewed coffee added – usually dark ales, pale ales or cream ales – but this one is a winner in my book. Everything works well, meshes nicely and the coffee doesn’t detract from the beer’s Schwarzbier roots. Tasty stuff
