Bottle from Consumers Beverage. Medium amber body with small creamy head, considerable lacing. So far, so good. Aroma goes south fast, cough medicine, band aids, cheap butterscotch. Taste is a slight improvement, some of the peat and earthy flavors known for the style. But just passable., sweet and syrupy, cloying.

Moderately hazy amber, with slight reddishness. Creamy light tan head that leaves a 1/4" ring and 1/2" of spotty lacing.

Smell is moderately sweet caramel, toffee, and a slight wet decayed wood aroma.

Taste leads with caramel that isn't as sweet as the aroma, following with some (moist) dried fruit - prune, fig, raisin, cherry . There is a slight vaguely spicy flavor [coriander+allspice+clove] as would be found in some Belgian saisons, but in the background, and much less pronounced, plus slight wood/smoke, and light, pleasant bitterness that nicely balances the sweet malt.

Feel is light side of medium, with a similar level of very fine carbonation that builds towards finish, and produces a slight drying effect.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it, and would recommend giving it a try. I tend to prefer Scotch ales that have more apparent smoke/peat, and where the individual flavor elements are less melded, & stand out more -this is more homogeneous- but I like this expression too.

Crowler from the Genesee Brew House.

This one pours a somewhat light brown color, with a small foamy head, and not much lacing.

This smells strangely boozy for the lower (7.5%) ABV, with a big fruitiness, toffee, and some licorice.

I usually love Genesee Brew House beers, but this didn't quite work as well for me. It's boozy and a bit thin. The flavor is mainly fruity maltiness.

This is medium bodied, but a touch thinner than I'd want it to be, with a decent level of drinkability.

This isn't one of Genny's best beers. It's still worth a try.

Too boozy, strong taste of hop, lacking the strong malt sweetness and the faint roastiness. Doesn't really taste like a scotch ale as all. Good looking though.

Rich amber to dark color. Strong "hoppy" aroma but not unpleasant. Strong rich flavor that had a slight peppery aftertaste. Overall, a rich flavorful experience that compares to the more expensive scotch ales.

The looks is opaque dark brown with some reddish tones. The head is creamy tan, short retention, with a ring remaining to lave some spotty lacing.

Smells of pumpernickel bread, molasses, licorice, star anise, clove, plum, raisin, and sour cherry.

Tastes follows the nose. Pumpernickel bread, molasses, and licorice upfront. Big, sweet, and malty. The mid-palate offers some clove and star anise spice. There is just a touch of earthy hop bitterness on the finish. Ripe dark fruits on the back end, plum and cherry. Finishes sweet but not cloying, malty, and leaving sticky sugars and oils coating the palate.

Feels big; smooth and creamy and sticky. Well-carbonated, so it coats the palate before moving.

Overall, a really good scotch ale. A solid example of the style, and quite tasty.

Pours mahogany and copper with browns and sultry orange hues. A fat tan head that lasts and clings. Nose is breaddy and has a touch of sweetness on it. Dark fruit like plum and a touch of earthy peat. Faint smoke. Hopes are not prominent on the nose. Taste follows the nose all the way. The Scotch ale seems to bring a touch of complexity that the brown ale does not. It also has a full mouthfeel and that too is different from the brown. The presence of the dark fruit as prominently as to be described as plum is a hall mark of the style. So is the mouthfeel. You can equate mouthfeel to the idea of how a liquid feels on your tongue. Light would be like water, medium like whole milk which does have some body and full is like cream. This beer drinks just like the nose but has a bit sweeter palate where you do see a few hops. Their pepper and spice will lead you to their bitterness that dries the finish and leaves this one medium dry. Small bubbles that just bite a little Finishes malty and drier. Not cloying or too sweet. Perfect example of the style. Light hearted but hearty. Fun and complex but not too rich or heavy. Strong with abv but very smooth.
