On tap at the Genesee Brew House in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a a fairly dark black, with a foamy mocha-colored head, and a good amount of sticky lacing.
Smells like intense roast, burnt pine, smoke, vanilla, and some light whiskey.
The barrel managed to not overpower the base very much. This is a definite improvement over the original beer, though, which I was not a huge fan of. The barrels impart a nice earthy vanilla character, while the roast of the base beer seems to have somehow been amplified. The roast, with the big hop blast seems to recreate a charred pine needle feel to it. There's very little whiskey flavor to it, but it's there in small amounts. There's a little bit of dark chocolate, too.
The beer has a pretty creamy mouthfeel, and a medium body, and a moderate level of carbonation.
This is a really nice beverage. The balance between the barrel and the base is really solid and enjoyable.
