We are CANticipating CANother scorcher of a day & I am drinking Lager-style & fruited CANned beers in an effort to beat the heat. I have been (mostly) homebound these past four/five weeks following a prostatectomy & it has given me the CANportunity to sift through the backlog here at Chez Woody. I have uncovered all sorts of beers to CANstitute brewery horizontals, but today is just going to be odds & sods.

From the CAN: "Brewed with Fruity & Tropical Mosaic Hops"; "Pilot Batch"; "[undersigned] Dean Jones Brewmaster"; "Malts: Pale Malt & Carapils"; "Hops: Mosaic & Herkules & Apollo"; "IBU: 16".

I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, steady C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It responded by forming just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with good retention. Color was a solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was VERY tropical with a pronounced Papaya/Guava/Passionfruit/Mango/Kiwi fruitiness. Wow! But, wildly out of spec for the style. Mouthfeel was medium, but soft and creamy on the tongue & in the mouth. The taste was like a tropical fruit salad or a mild Southern Hemisphere IPA. It was much less bitter than an IPA, but its use of Mosaic hops was unmistakable & undeniable. Mmm. I like the taste, but where it usually does not do it for me in an IPA, here it fit in nicely, except for the style guidelines. Finish was semi-dry, very tropical fruity & quite satisfying. I think that I would like some fruit for lunch …

Similar to the Imperial version, this beer is nicely hopped, and has a nice feel to it.

Slightly hazy gold with moderate foamy head. Smells of tropical fruit hops and a bit of malt. There's a pretty strong vegetal taste, maybe spinach or kale, that pretty much overpowers the nicer flavors. Very strange. It lingers in the aftertaste.

From the 12 oz can in a snifter. This refreshing cream ale
pours a nicely glowing medium amber with a nice head of white foam
that settles to a thick ring, thin pool, and displays some nice lacing. Nose
of zesty grassy hops and sweet honey malts with a touch of cracker.
Flavors are spot on with a grassy and spicy hop profile that is touched
with subtle citrus zest and light pine with cracker and sweet honey
malt touches. Very nicely refreshing mouth feel---medium high carbonation
is refreshing and quaffable, medium light body, and a hop forward finish.

Overall, a very nice ale in a style that gets low reviews.

Nice

Cheers

somehow the addition of the mosaic hops has turned their classic and budget cream ale into almost a craft beer. i think part of it may be the freshness here, just drinking this thing at the brewery instead of wherever else, it makes a difference no doubt. seriously though, the mosaic in nose and taste almost turns this into an ipl type, with the dry long fermented crispness of the classic cream ale, but then some floral and fruity hoppiness along with some obvious plant based bitterness to finish, not quite raw or vegetal, but sturdy and earthy, surprisingly forward really considering the base beer demographic, and even impressive in this context. it sure isnt the best expression of mosaic that exists, but there is a pleasant fruity vibe to it, melon and pineapple and sweet oiliness, so i like it, it almost overwhelms the sort of monotonous base, a cool addition, unexpected to say the least, but it works pretty darn well. a cool sort of modern twist on a generational legend of a base beer, awesomely fresh and packed with mosaic hoppiness. still light and clean, a little bolder than the original obviously, but i could make a night of this one...

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is hoppy, light berries. Taste is refreshing, a bit of hops, malts, a touch of berries. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall drinks a bit like a session IPA despite it's 6.4% abv.
