Smells like a friggin' tootsie roll and tastes the same. Your mileage will depend on how much you enjoy said chocolate-flavored, dog-turd-shaped candy logs. As for me, I'm not sure I can finish this.

Update: Yeah, this was ultimately a drain pour, which is a rarity for an alcoholic like myself. Just overwhelmingly sweet with zero subtlety. Not a good beer at all.

Poured into a small chalice: color is dark amber, solid, but not brown; head is tan with fine and small bubbles with a 1/2 inch presentation and a lingering top.

Smell is chocolate, not chocolate malt but definitely melted lingering chocolate, some notable boozy character towards the last bit of aroma.

taste is 72% chocolate with a hint of caramel malt and note of booziness.

Mouthfeel is not cloying, almost a bit to dry for a scotch ale even with the lingering chocolate.

Overall, i drop this beer down because i get minimal scotch ale aroma and flavor, but tons of chocolate.

Genesee Brewing Co. "Genesee Brew House Dark Chocolate Scotch Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is actually brewed with chocolate? It states "72% Dark Chocolate." on the neck label, and "Ale brewed with chocolate with natural flavors and caramel color added" on the body label. It certainly smells like chocolate! That of course could be coming from extract, but hey, if they've used real chocolate and it doesn't seem like extract then who cares where it's coming from? It's a bit hazy, and kind of a deep chestnut brown with golden highlights near the base of the glass. The head is a short and creamy tan lid that seems to be holding well and leaving spotty lacing behind. The flavor follows the aroma with a big dark chocolate flavor. Some bitterness appears at the swallow and then what might be something like a Scotch ale, it's hard to tell as I only get pieces of it wth the chocolate lingering. There may even be some hops there, and yeasty fruitiness. Again, hard to tell. It's certainly chocolatey, and I guess it's different than a chocolate stout or porter. It's all chocolate though, and I think it would best be defined as a dessert beer. I've still got about half left and I don't really want it anymore, I've had my fill of chocolate and there's really not enough of the beer underneath to make we meant to keep looking for it. So, definitely satiating. For chocolate lovers this one's a winner, for beer lovers not so much so. Medium in body and gently crisp, moderately bitter, and the alcohol never shows.
