Kellerbiers are a style of lager first brewed in Germany, perhaps dating to the Middle Ages. Our Black Cherry Vanilla Kellerbier is brewed with both our German heritage and the beer's history in mind, but with a modern twist: the addition of natural black cherry and vanilla flavors. The result is a bright, refreshing lager with a perfect addition of black cherry and vanilla flavors to compliment a light malt body.

12 oz can poured into a tulip glass. Pours a clear light yellow color with a fizzy head. Aroma and flavor feature slightly medicinal black cherry and sweet vanilla along with light grainy malt. Mouthfeel is prickly and light. Overall, it's a simple beer, and reasonably drinkable (for me; my wife disagreed, saying it tasted like cough syrup). Either way, it's a one-and-done for me. Genesee's other fruited beers are much better.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden color with a small head of white foam. The head fades rather quickly leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is big of a grainy smell mixed with tons of black cherry cola and vanilla. Along with these smells comes some notes of corn, must, and hay.
Taste – The taste starts out with a sweet black cherry flavor mixed with some of the grain that was in the nose. At the same time there is some caramel and vanilla sweetness and some notes of wheat and corn. As the taste advances the sweetness amplifies a bit all while the grain takes on a more crackery malt profile. With the changes on the tongue, one is left with a sweet berry vanilla taste at the end.
Mouthfeel – The body is light with a slightly more effervescent carbonation. For the sweet and somewhat malty nature, the feel is nice and makes for an easy sipper.
Overall – A tad on the sweet side, but an easy drinker overall. Probably good for a warmer summer day.

Lightly hazy gold, with one finger of quickly-dissipating white head.

(As others have said) smells of black cherry soda.

Taste is close to aroma, but with a slight medicinal flavor, that detracts from it a bit.

Feel is light-medium, with moderate, sharp carbonation bite.

Overall, not horrible, but not something I'd like to revisit either. One & done.

Smells great, tastes horrible. Their worst one of the series, was so bad I had to dump it which is a rarity for me. Good idea but poor execution. Just bad.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of black cherry soda. Taste is black cherries, light vanilla, a bit on the sweet side. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a unique beer.

Bad. That's the review. I'm not putting any more energy into it than Genny is into making this swill.

Is this what people like drinking now?

Purchased in a can, served in an earthenware pint glass. Looks clearer than the kellerbiers I'm more familiar with (paler than a Franconian, maybe Bavarian style), but smells somewhere between a young kriek lambic and a vanilla rum cocktail with gently bready notes.

Sips easily, drinks quickly. Pleasantly floral, light vanilla tones fill the nostrils mixed with an unmistakeable Lambert/Tulare dark cherry note...both of which carry over into the flavour. Smoothly creamy with a vague breadiness.
Crazy drinkable, after the initial sample more was acquired and shared within the household. All of our beer-disliking, mead and lambic-loving members were delighted to find something they enjoyed that was still a "beer."

Went nicely with a light charcuterie board, but also was a hit alongside a tarragon/dijon basted salmon.
Hope to find more of this lovely stuff soon.
Good job, Genesee!

On tap at the Genesee Brew House in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a mostly light golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells unbelievably artificial – it just does not smell good, at all. Cherry cough syrup, Torani vanilla flavoring, pure sugar – just what even is this?

If actual black cherry was used in this, I would assume it’d have a darker color to it – but it’s basically still the color of a plain lager. So, clearly, artificial flavor was used here, and not used well. This smells distinctly like Torani vanilla syrup being dumped into Robitussin – who would want to drink something like that? There’s no hint that this is a lager, a kellerbier – or even a beer. This is closer to tasting like an energy drink or something like that.

This is light bodied, but simultaneously syrupy, and just not drinkable at all.

I absolutely love Genesee, but this was an unmitigated disaster. This should not have been released.
