Winter Solstice is a time of celebration for northern dwellers such as us, and it is yet another great reason to celebrate the good life in Fairbanks, Alaska. It’s dark and cold, but the days only get longer from here, so let’s have a beer!

What to do when it’s chilly and dim? Well, a year ago we brewed a new Imperial Oatmeal Stout – fermented it in stainless then moved it into Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels for a year of rest. Throughout the craziness of 2020 this big, sticky stout has been tucked into the back of the brewery, breathing in and out of the charred, whiskey soaked oak, lending big vanilla and coconut notes, along with bringing a warming bourbon kick to the pallet. Clocking in at an enjoyable 11.0% ABV, this beer is a delicious winter solstice treat this year, and is a perfect candidate to put in the cellar and enjoy months or years in the future.

Way too much alcohol burn for me when 'fresh' (had it on tap, so assume current [April, 2025] year, un-aged version). There is a rich malt character to the beer, so I likely would rate this higher with some age on it.

Pours jet black with no head and no lacing.

Taste has a very nice bitter chocolate malt mixed with lots of dark fruit (especially fig), barrel and booziness that works. Medium viscosity and above average lingering aftertaste.

Bottle number 217/900 dated 12-21-2020.
